OOOOPPFFF! And then we’re on the ground!! Doing the same thing the same way for decades but this time one foot didn’t move fast enough, high enough or the right way. Or it’s that great old ice we just didn’t see. Yup, this happened to me last week. Getting groceries from the car into the house. The step leading into the house, the same one I have used for at least 26 years, caught my toe on the sill. Both hands with bags, not much way to break the fall and I felt my left knee muscle stretch a little too much. Now what?
Ok, it happens to all of us. Being prepared and thinking about what we will do is really important. Our first and worst enemy is panic. Once you have stopped moving, take a few deep breaths, calm down, take inventory of your body.
1. How are you positioned?
2. Can you move your arms, legs, head?
3. Does anything hurt and how much. If something is bleeding, is it bad enough to put some pressure on it. Slow down and think it out.
4. Next, look around and plan a way to get back up.
5. Rolling over and then getting back on your hands and knees is the next plan of action.
6. If someone is with you, they then can hook their arm under one of your arms and help you get one foot under you and then the next and stand up. If you are alone, it might take a bit but don’t give up, take slow intentional movements until you are standing.
7. If someone is with you, they can also go or call for help. Don’t have someone who is already compromised by a walker, cane or age try to help you get up. The last thing you need is both of you on the ground!
8. Of course, the best advice is to have your cell phone on you at all times. Do keep in mind that if it is in a back pocket and you land on your back you can still be out of luck if you can’t get to it. Amazon has several Cellphone neck pouches available in the $10-15.00 price range.
9. Once you are on your feet and inside, take note of anything that is hurting, cut or scratched. As soon as you are able, get things cleaned up. And as always, call 911 if you need to. Or, call your doctor’s office and see if they think you need to be seen. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
10. Next is signing up for one of the Lifeline or Life Alert devices. The Jitterbug phones have the Urgent Response button built right in if you sign up for the service. Some Smartwatches also have fall features available.
No, I don’t get any kick back for these recommendations.
11. Exercise and staying active, keeping our strength up on a daily basis is our first defense. Even just taking a short walk daily can keep us in better shape to care for ourselves.
