Wind In The Wires I JUST NEED A HAND TODAY SENIOR SERVICE

12/22/2025

Helloooo out there........Hoping you all have a great week as it is Christmas week. Stay safe, watch for speeding WalMart carts, crazed Mom's trying to find the one thing they forgot! And most everyone else just trying to navigate another holiday season. Ok I am looking into the 2026 calendar. I will need your feedback in the way of a thumbs up or like to give a reason to keep sending messages out to the ether. It would be very nice if we could create a community in 2026, but I cannot do it alone. In order to create content, I will need to know what you want to hear and learn about. So, let's contemplate out there and let me know. Do we go forward or not into the new year? Love, Light, Peace

BRRRRR! Below Zero so early this year? For every year older we seniors get, we need to keep safety of ourselves at the forefront. How many of us for decades just tossed on a hoodie or sweater and dashed out to the mailbox or to do some other small chore? Oh, come on, I know it has been all of us. Well, that may not be the best choice now. What happens if you slip and fall? Got gloves to help you get a hand securely on the ground? What about those ice cleats I told you about the other day? Are they both just inside the door with your phone? And not on your hands and feet? You know what I mean.
If you don’t have any other reason to care than your best friend cat or dog or both, what will they do if you can’t get back inside? Sure, I am appealing to your softer senses, but sometimes it is a fact of life for us older folks. There are just days especially around this time of the year, we just don’t feel like caring so much anymore. But sure as I’m writing this, that changes in a day or two. So THINK before you do something. On another note, safety and staying warm in the house is also very important. I am sure we all have at least one portable space heater we like to use this time of the year. I have my favorite under my desk as I write this. How many times does one fire department or the other get on the news and says Hey, use them safely!! Keep all and I mean all flammable materials away from all space heaters!!
Sure it feels great to toss the lap throw over the heater for a few minutes, but what happens if you fall asleep and somehow that lap throw catches fire? What then, usually you are in a real mess. Not to mention how that great heat dries out our skin. And usually, we have them near our feet and lower legs. Feet and lower legs are harder for us to care for. If your skin feels dry put some hand lotion on them every day as you feel the need. It will keep your skin healthy and prevent possible infections. Ya know, there is nothing wrong with hopping back into bed with the cat or dog to stay warm either. You can call friends, text someone, do crosswords, watch TV. Save electricity to boot! Oh, and this is for the guy’s. How many of you hard working fellas use these cold days to set back and watch a game with a couple of cold ones? Well, do that, but make sure that everything you need or want to do outside is done for the day before you toss one back. Just common sense.

Good Morning! ICE YIKES!! Thanks to Mother Nature, it rained the other night right on top of snow. Of course, it turned snow to Ice. Ok, today I have a meeting I want to attend. And I am going to be using one of my pair of boots with Ice Cleats on them. For at least the last 25+ years, I have chosen Safety over fashion or what anyone else thinks, period. Since I live in a rural area, my garage is unattached, had horses to feed for many years, I need foot safety many times in the winter. Yaktrax Walk Traction Cleats available on Amazon were a type I used for many years. The size often varies according to the type of shoe you plan to use them on. Crampons Ice Cleats Traction Snow Grips for Boots Shoes Women Men Anti Slip 19 Stainless Steel Spikes are now my go to for my boots. Many styles and prices available on Amazon. I actually have two pairs of boots with these ice spikes permanently attached. I just keep them in the boot tray for the rest of the year. One for getting the mail, checking out things around the house, and just navigating here outside at home. The other on a more stylish boot for going to town. This is a trick I used for years when I was working full time and wanted to be safe over impressing anyone. I put my tennies in a bag and carry them to the car while wearing my ice cleat boots to the garage. Once I get the car out of the garage the garage door shut, I sit sideways with my feet out of the car and change into my tennies. Then put my boots in the car on the passenger side floorboard. And reverse the system when I get home and carry my tennies back into the house while wearing my ice cleat boots. That way when I get to town I am good to go in cleared parking lots. At some jobs, I would be able to keep my day shoes under my desk and wear the ice cleat boots in and change. And yes, the younger women would smirk, cringe and say they were ugly. But guess who was able to go anywhere she wanted in those boots and guess who slipped and slid around in their flats? And no doubt found themselves on their butts a few times but will never admit it.
Keep in mind that when you start using any ice gripper device it will change how you walk and you will need to be patient and practice a bit before you go charging down the walk. You will have to be aware you need to lift your feet more to walk. Keep in mind the ice cleats can catch on a nail or something on the sidewalk. In essence, you are learning to walk using a safety aid. No, I do not get any kickback for any product I recommend.
Stay safe this winter but get out there and keep doing the things you enjoy. Sure it may take a little longer but it’s worth it to stay active and enjoy life. As always, you need to take inventory of your abilities and do what will keep you Safe! Love, Light, Peace, Rose Wind in the Wires.

OOOOPPFFF! And then we’re on the ground!! Doing the same thing the same way for decades but this time one foot didn’t move fast enough, high enough or the right way. Or it’s that great old ice we just didn’t see. Yup, this happened to me last week. Getting groceries from the car into the house. The step leading into the house, the same one I have used for at least 26 years, caught my toe on the sill. Both hands with bags, not much way to break the fall and I felt my left knee muscle stretch a little too much. Now what?
Ok, it happens to all of us. Being prepared and thinking about what we will do is really important. Our first and worst enemy is panic. Once you have stopped moving, take a few deep breaths, calm down, take inventory of your body.
1. How are you positioned?
2. Can you move your arms, legs, head?
3. Does anything hurt and how much. If something is bleeding, is it bad enough to put some pressure on it. Slow down and think it out.
4. Next, look around and plan a way to get back up.
5. Rolling over and then getting back on your hands and knees is the next plan of action.
6. If someone is with you, they then can hook their arm under one of your arms and help you get one foot under you and then the next and stand up. If you are alone, it might take a bit but don’t give up, take slow intentional movements until you are standing.
7. If someone is with you, they can also go or call for help. Don’t have someone who is already compromised by a walker, cane or age try to help you get up. The last thing you need is both of you on the ground!
8. Of course, the best advice is to have your cell phone on you at all times. Do keep in mind that if it is in a back pocket and you land on your back you can still be out of luck if you can’t get to it. Amazon has several Cellphone neck pouches available in the $10-15.00 price range.
9. Once you are on your feet and inside, take note of anything that is hurting, cut or scratched. As soon as you are able, get things cleaned up. And as always, call 911 if you need to. Or, call your doctor’s office and see if they think you need to be seen. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
10. Next is signing up for one of the Lifeline or Life Alert devices. The Jitterbug phones have the Urgent Response button built right in if you sign up for the service. Some Smartwatches also have fall features available.
No, I don’t get any kick back for these recommendations.
11. Exercise and staying active, keeping our strength up on a daily basis is our first defense. Even just taking a short walk daily can keep us in better shape to care for ourselves.
Remember, our families are depending on us to attend these Holiday Family Gatherings again this year! Love, Light, Peace Rose Wind in the Wires

Good Monday Morning! As we approach either the Happiest Time of the Year or in some cases the most depressing part of the year, let's take a look at some ways to handle this rocky road. If you are a senior that has a lot of close family that gets together and celebrates, count your blessings and good times. Other seniors have spouses, friends and other family members no longer with us. I can understand this as a few decades ago my parent's died shortly before Christmas some years apart. So yes, that good old depression can come out of nowhere when we least expect it. Some years go by unaffected and then there is a year here and there that it hits hard. The sun can be shinning, people laughing and yet all we see is darkness. A way I have found to naviage these times is to take some time and breathe, sit quietly and start to remember the good times. Get out of the house and go do an activity that brightens your thoughts. That might be getting together with friends, making a few phone calls or something as simple as a walk around the block. Try to avoid any spur of the moment shopping spree that we most often regret in a day or so. Or any other rash and sudden decision like selling the house, getting rid of the car or in some cases surrendering a beloved pet. Those dark times are going to go away in a few weeks or even days. Get a handle on it, plan ahead, get a few new puzzles or craft ideas to take you mind off this time of the year. And if all else fails, get to the Doctors office for some temporary anxiety help. All this will pass, the winter blues will go away and again we see the sunshine as we have that second cup of coffee. Love, Light, Peace Rose Wind in the Wires and I Just Need A Hand Today Senior Service.

Good Morning! Well, it only took a week for a scam to hit my website today. When I logged on I had a message from a Manager AI that my account would be shut down in 24 hours as a Shih Tzu dog breeder in Arizona took offense at my content. Really? Now what did I say that a dog breeder in Arizona was so offended? Looking into this, I found that those messages are a SCAM. Yes folks, it is a scammers paradise these days. There is one service that will always to be free to anyone and that is: If you get a message or a call, you can give me a call to get another set of ears and eyes on it. More than likely it will be a scam. I can look into it for you, and help you report it if necessay. My number is 319-391-4289. As seniors we are targeted differently than our children or younger generations. If in doubt, call someone to help you look into it. Stay Safe, Rose

Good Tuesday Morning! Keeping safety in mind as we age is something that tends to sneak up on us. Things we have done for decades and we just don't think about are sometimes our worst enemy. Is it time to rearrange the cupboard and get the things on the highest shelf lower? How are we navigating our throw rug situation? Are we finding we get a toe caught now and again? Doing a self and surroundings assessment is probably a good thing now that we're all going to be spending more time in the house again. Stay Safe and if you need a hand for an hour or even less, I'm here for you. Have A Great Day! Rose
