💙❤️ Community, Connection, and Heart Health ❤️💙

This past Saturday, February 14, the MS Diabetes Network was honored to participate in the Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library’s “Reads and Beats” event in recognition of Heart Health Month!

Our team provided free health screenings to community members, including:
✔️ Blood Pressure Checks 🩺
✔️ Blood Glucose Screenings🩸
✔️ A1c Testing🩸

These screenings are a vital step in helping individuals better understand their risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease—because prevention and early detection save lives.

We were also thrilled to be joined by the Delta Scholars medical students from William Carey University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, one of our valued partners. Their dedication to community outreach and patient education made a tremendous impact, and we are grateful for their service alongside us.

Thank you to the library for hosting such a meaningful event and to everyone who stopped by to take charge of their health. Together, we are building healthier Mississippi communities—one screening at a time.

🌟 Mindful Health Tips for a Joyful Holiday Season 🌟

It's big candy day! We have now officially entered the never ending season of sweet treats.

It’s mostly a time for celebration, togetherness, and joy. The Mississippi Diabetes Network is here with a few tips to help you enjoy all the season has to offer—while staying mindful of your health:

1. 🍽️Plan Your Plate: Fill half your plate with non-starchy veggies and make room for lean proteins. Balance treats with fiber-rich foods to keep blood sugar stable.

2. 👟Stay Active: Take a brisk walk after meals, join a family hike, or dance to your favorite holiday music. Every bit of movement counts toward a healthier season!

3. 🥩🥒Mind Your Portions: Savor holiday dishes by slowing down and enjoying each bite. Fill your plate first with protein and non-starch vegetables, allowing for smaller portions of seasonal favorites allow you to indulge mindfully.

4.🚰Keep Hydrated: Choose water or festive, sugar-free drinks to stay hydrated, energized, and satisfied.

5. 🩸Check Blood Sugar Regularly: Sticking to a routine can be challenging, but monitoring your levels helps keep you on track during the festivities.

Wishing you a joyful, healthy holiday season from the Mississippi Diabetes Network!

TRANSFORMATION TIME!⏲️‼️
Meet Whitley!

💥Beginning A1C 14.9% -- current A1C 5.5%

❤️‍🔥From multiple insulin meds per day to NONE!

"On February 21, 2024, I was told I was in DKA and had never been diabetic. In a matter of seconds, nothing made sense anymore. I spent 5 days in ICU. I learned my A1C was 14.9! I was stunned.

I went home to two autistic children on massive doses of insulin and a new fear of what could have been so I knew I had to get this right!

I began talking with an endocrinologist and Diabetes Solutions. It was the best decision made so far. I was taught exactly what I could do to prevent another spike in my A1C as well as what hidden ingredients could cause harm. I took it all in as I was wanting to reverse my diagnosis.

Less than 3 months later May 1, 2024, my A1C was at 5.9!! I was taken off the insulin and placed on oral medication! My new goal was to be rid of taking pills everyday and treating my diabetes with proper foods only!! I was determined!!
I knew I stood a chance of beating the odds so I kept going! Every now and then I would treat myself with something sweet but it was always in moderation while keeping a close eye on my glucose readings!

My most recent A1C, taken October 1st, 2024, read at 5.5!! I find out soon if I can come off the medication completely!

The last 8 months has taught me a lot about myself, the foods we consume, and unexpected turns in life and most importantly, my relationship with God! You have to keep going no matter what! The win is just a little further!

We all can get there with sacrifice, motivation, moderation and dedication!
I thank the Most High everyday for that wake up call and my progress there after! It was all Him and I was just used as a vessel!

I hope my story is used as motivation in your journey! I wish the same success to each one of you reading this and want to let you know that Beating Diabetes is Possible!!"

Your story is most definitely motivating, Whitley! We are THRILLED for you and honored to work with you.

🩵Weekend Wellness🩵
Reminder from Mississippi Diabetes Network
Taking your diabetes medication as prescribed is key to managing your health and preventing complications. Whether it’s pills or insulin, consistency is vital. Here’s why:

• Blood Sugar Control: Proper medication use helps stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of high or low blood sugar episodes.

• Prevent Complications: Taking your meds correctly lowers the risk of heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve issues associated with diabetes.

• Improves Energy & Mood: When proper medication management and healthy lifestyle keeps your blood sugar balanced, you’ll feel more energetic and less fatigued.

This weekend, take a moment to double-check your medication routine. Set reminders, use a pill organizer, or talk to your doctor if you have questions. Stay committed to your health!
