I was reminiscing recently about Christmas light displays from my childhood. Back then, it seemed like everywhere you went the houses were all lit up and decorated with Santas, snowmen, nativity scenes, etc. Our family would pile into the car and drive around all the neighborhoods, just soaking in the glow.
I’ve noticed a significant decline in this beloved tradition over recent years. And I get it: schedules are busy, wallets are tight, and the thought of decking the halls can be a bit much with everything else going on.
But why do we do it? Where did this tradition start? For that, we have to go WAAAAY back in time. During this time of year, as the days grow shorter, the nights grow longer, and the cold gets colder all the time, people needed a reminder that the sun, the warmth, and the light weren’t gone forever. They’d be back in a few months. But until then, they needed hope.
So, they brought the light inside! They’d burn candles in the windows to encourage the light to return. They brought in nature (the origin of the Christmas tree) and put candles on that, too. They kept the fires burning in the hearth. Until the light came back to the outter world, they kept it alive in their inner world.
Over the centuries, with the development of electric lights, the decorations extended beyond the inside of the home to the outside as well. And as more and more people decorated their homes, more and more light filled the world.
We are living in a crazy time, but I think we can all agree that the world needs more Light, maybe now more than ever before. You don’t have to go full-on Griswold, by any means, but find a way to bring at least a little light to where you are. My small light, plus your small light, plus the small light of others adds up to quite a lot.
