Being still is a practice in mindfulness that allows us to remain in the present moment, gain clarity, move from a state of “doing” to a state of “being”, find a deeper awareness, personal insight, and higher connection. When we practice mindfulness, and are able to live in the present moment, we are embracing the very essence of nature. Nature never worries about the past or what might happen in the future, it remains in the present moment at all times.

How do you use the power of the wild to bring yourself back to the present moment and find stillness?

Three Lessons the Ocean Teaches:

1. You can always find a level of calmness if you dive deep enough.
2. Like the tide, things come and go- your situation isn’t permanent.
3. You’re ability to expand is limitless.

Recite the following affirmation out loud:

“I am open to reconnecting to the wild. I am the wild- the trees, the flowers, the animals, the wind, the water, the air. We are all connected and are one. I open my heart and mind to receiving gifts from the wild.”

Three things nature teaches us in winter:

1. It’s ok to slow down and allow internal restoration.
2. We can strip down all that is hindering us from being healthy and full of life.
3. Through resting, we can find alignment with what our higher self wants.

Repost from -Among the many gifts that neuroscience research has brought in the last 10 years are the findings that viewing sunlight circa-dawn/sunrise and circa-sunset provides the strongest cue for aligning: wake-sleep rhythms, optimizing metabolic function (e.g., a recent paper showed the positive effects of intermittent fasting only worked when circadian cues were consistent), dopamine production, learning, wound healing, etc. The abundance of quality data on this is now overwhelming.
_
Q: “what is special about sunlight at these two times of day?” A: When the sun is low in the sky a.k.a. low solar angle, the retinal neurons that communicate to central clocks (and they, to ALL the cells and clocks of the peripheral tissues: liver, gut, etc) are able to align with ease. Other cues such as timing of exercise activity, timing of feeding and temperature are also important of course but viewing low solar angle sunlight is the optimal cue.
_
Q: “what if there isn’t much sun where I live?” A: unless you live in a cave the sun goes up and goes down each day. It’s not absolutely necessary to see it as it crosses the horizon. But viewing sunlight when it is low in the sky twice a day is the most powerful thing we can do for these bio-timing mechanisms that pervade all the cells, organs, and tissues of our body.
-
Q: “can I view it through window?” A: it takes 50 times longer to set your clock when viewing sunlight through window glass. Prescription eye glasses and contacts are fine.
-
Q: “how long?” 2-10min depending on brightness should suffice. Regularity is the key. Don’t fret if you miss a sunrise or sunset but try to see them most days if you can.
-
Q: “what about people with low/no vision?”
A: Those with eyes generally maintain the neurons that set the central clock even if they are pattern blind.
_
Last but not least: never stare at the sun or any light that is so bright it’s painful. Once retinal neurons are lost they don’t come back. Protect your eyesight.
