Avoiding non-surgical treatments isn’t something many practices lead with.

At NJBS, our primary goal is for you to feel fully functional, so trying to feel normal seems like an afterthought. With options like targeted therapy, guided injections, and pain management, we typically to see 8/10 patients return to work without surgery.

Take the right steps for your pain by better understanding your options without jumping into surgery.

A $20 foldable chair is often times better than your couch. Yes, you heard us.

Dr Schmaus discusses the benefit of what lumbar support really entails, citing how a couch typically is too soft or too deep for good support.

What can you do to mitigate bad lumbar support? It starts with better habits. Get up every 30 minutes to walk around whether you’re working from home or watching TV, you back will thank you later.

Found a brain aneurysm on imaging? Here’s what to know next.

About 3 percent of people have a brain aneurysm and most will never have symptoms or need treatment.

That risk increases significantly if you have a family history. If two or more close relatives have had aneurysms, the risk can rise to as high as 15 percent.

According to Dr. Karimi, that family history is when careful evaluation and expert guidance matter most.

At New Jersey Brain and Spine, we help patients understand what an aneurysm finding actually means. Not every aneurysm requires intervention, but every one deserves an expert review.

We look at the full picture including imaging, family history, age, and risk factors to determine the safest next step.

If an aneurysm has already been identified or you’ve been told you need follow-up, schedule a consultation with Dr. Karimi.

Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s often raises big questions about what treatment looks like over time.

At NJBS, our role is supporting patients and their care teams when advanced treatment options are being considered, with a thoughtful, conservative approach focused on symptom management and shared decision-making.

“My kids told me I’m shrinking.” Dr. Schmaus says they’re not totally wrong.

As we get older, we do lose height. Part of it is posture. Part of it is the spinal discs slowly losing fluid, kind of like a tire losing air over time. That change can affect how we move, how we feel, and how our back holds up day to day.

If you’ve noticed changes in posture, stiffness, or back discomfort, it’s worth paying attention.

At NJ Brain & Spine, we focus on understanding the underlying cause and taking a thoughtful, conservative approach before jumping to treatment.

This January marks the one year anniversary of our Multidisciplinary DBS Fast Track Clinic and Multidisciplinary NPH Clinic.

What makes these clinics work is not a protocol. It’s people. Collaboration across specialties. Shared accountability. A team aligned around doing what’s right for patients.

This week we paused to celebrate the teams behind the work and the impact they’ve built together.

For many people with Parkinson’s, tremor is the symptom that most impacts daily life.

Dr. Azmi specializes in treating movement symptoms of Parkinson’s and essential tremor when medications are no longer providing enough relief. His work focuses on advanced surgical options, including MRI-guided focused ultrasound and deep brain stimulation, designed to reduce tremor and improve function.

NJ Brain & Spine typically sees patients with a confirmed diagnosis who are exploring next-step treatment options.

If that’s you or you’d like to learn more, DM us.

“Sit down and take a load off your back” actually does the opposite.

Dr Schmaus discusses that he sees more patients that are sedentary (prolonged sitting) than people who are active in their occupation due to spinal compression that results from inactivity.

You’ll never hear someone say they hurt their back putting in a lightbulb. Adding more movement to your day can sometimes be the best “medicine” you need to prevent extra doctor visits.
