When you ask me my political views, just look at my teachers.

Healthcare has never been neutral.
It has always been shaped by who had power.
And who did not.

This Black History Month, I’m thinking about the Black health pioneers, educators, physicians, and activists who refused to stay silent.
Refused to stay neutral.
Refused to let medicine pretend it was separate from justice.

✨ Henrietta Lacks — Her cells changed modern medicine. Her story exposed the cost of progress without consent.

✨ Angela Davis — “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”
Systems don’t heal themselves. They are forced to evolve.

✨ Fannie Lou Hamer — “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”
Health freedom has always been collective.

✨ Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD — “They seem to forget there is a cause for every ailment.”
First Black woman physician in the U.S. Practicing root-cause medicine in 1864.

✨ Lucy Diggs Slowe — She fought for Black women’s dignity inside institutions never designed to protect them.
Access without equity is not liberation.

Now let’s be clear.

Black women are still 3–4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.
Black Americans have a shorter life expectancy than their white counterparts.
Black patients are less likely to have their pain believed or adequately treated.
And despite making up over 13% of the U.S. population, Black physicians account for less than 6% of the medical workforce.

This is not accidental.
This is history echoing in policy, access, and outcomes.

So when you ask me my political views…
Look at my teachers.

Because healthcare is power.
And healing has always been resistance.

Honoring Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, three enslaved Black women whose names were nearly erased from medical history.

They endured repeated, painful vaginal surgeries without anesthesia as experimental subjects. No consent. No dignity. No choice.

Their suffering advanced the field of gynecology, while history credited the physician and forgot the women whose bodies were used to build it.

The echo is still present. In how pelvic pain is minimized. In how consent is rushed. In how patients feel unheard during the most vulnerable exams.

Providers must practice trauma-informed care. Explain every step. Ask permission. Slow down.

Patients can ask.
What are you doing.
Why are you doing it.
Do I have another option.

Because progress built on silence must be met with transparency.

Honoring Fannie Lou Hamer, a fearless civil rights leader.

In 1961, she went into a hospital for a minor procedure and left having been forcibly sterilized without her knowledge or consent. A practice so common among Black women in the South that she named it the “Mississippi Appendectomy.”

This was not a medical accident. It was a violation of bodily autonomy disguised as care.

The echo is still with us. In conversations about consent. In whose pain is minimized. In whose reproductive choices are questioned. In whose voices are ignored in exam rooms.

Providers must remember that history lives in the room with every patient. Consent must be explicit. Explanations must be clear. Autonomy must be protected.

Patients can ask.
What are you doing.
Why are you doing it.
What are my alternatives.

Because care without consent is not care.
