Mother's Night
Tonight marks the first night of the Yule celebration. Mother's Night (Modraniht), the first night of Yule comes the night before the winter solstice which starts at 10:03 am Sunday Dec 21st, 2025. It is a Norse-inspired tradition honoring female ancestors, protective female spirits (Dísir), and goddesses like F***g, marked by lighting candles to guide them, sharing stories of female lineage, offering food, and dedicating the night to the women who nurture and protect family, welcoming blessings for the new year.
Core Traditions & Rituals
Honoring Women: Focuses on the divine feminine, maternal figures, and female ancestors (Dísir).
Lighting Candles: A candle is lit at dusk and burns through the night to welcome the Dísir and guide them, often placed on an altar with family photos.
Storytelling: Families share stories and memories of grandmothers, mothers, and female relatives to keep their legacies alive.
Offerings: Food, drink (libations), or crafted items are offered to the Dísir and goddesses.
Feasting: A special meal is shared, sometimes with a place set for the ancestors.
Blessings: A time for the ancestral mothers to bless the family, especially expectant mothers, for the coming year.

How to Celebrate
Start at Dusk: Begin rituals as the sun sets on the Winter Solstice.

Bake/Cook: Prepare special foods, perhaps traditional family recipes, as offerings or for the feast.
Recite Prayers/Toasts: Offer prayers or toasts to the mothers and goddesses
Stay Up Late: Some stay up all night sharing stories to maximize time with the spirits.
This night is ruled over by the woman of the house who stands for all the womanly wights that care for their kin.
