We did a thing the other day! We inoculated some fresh logs and mulch with mushroom spores. We are hoping to see Wine cap, Sh*take, and Blue oyster this year. 🤞🍄

🌿 Herbal Spotlight: Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)
One of our favorite signs that spring has arrived in the Appalachian woods is the delicate bloom of Bloodroot. This native spring ephemeral emerges early in the season, pushing through the leaf litter with a single white flower wrapped in its curled leaf.
Its name comes from the deep red sap found in the rhizome, which has been used historically as a dye and in traditional practices by Indigenous peoples.
Bloodroot only blooms for a short time before the forest canopy fills in, making its appearance feel like a quiet seasonal gift from the woodland floor.
Plants like Bloodroot remind us that even when the forest appears still in winter, life is always preparing beneath the soil.
We always encourage admiring this powerful native plant in the wild rather than harvesting it, helping ensure it continues thriving in our Appalachian ecosystems.
If you’re out walking the woods this week, keep an eye on the forest floor—you might just catch one of spring’s earliest wildflowers.
🌱 Where plants hold the power and you hold the key.
