Our retina specialists were proud to contribute to the global conversation at Hawaiian Eye and Retina 2026 on the Big Island, Hawaii.

Dr. Srinivas R. Sadda shared expertise across multiple sessions, from acquired vitelliform lesions in AMD and the evolving relationship between anti-VEGF therapy and atrophy, to expert panels focused on imaging, case management, and emerging optogenetic therapies.

Dr. Michael Ip helped lead dynamic discussions on diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, and real-world decision-making for retinal vein occlusion, offering practical insights clinicians can apply in everyday care. We’re honored to see Doheny-affiliated faculty advancing dialogue, collaboration, and innovation in retina on an international stage.

The 4th Annual Doheny-UCLA International Retina Symposium 👁️ was held today. It was a day full of world-class science, and real camaraderie.

What stood out most was the collaborative spirit within the UCLA Department of Ophthalmology. From thoughtful case discussions to moments of good-natured challenge, learning felt truly shared. A highlight was watching Dr. David Sarraf test the faculty with complex and intriguing retinal cases, sparking lively dialogue and sharp clinical insight.

With international perspectives from Sobha Sivaprasad, MD, FRCOpth, of Moorfields Eye Hospital and Mark W. Johnson, MD, of the University of Michigan, the day delivered practical takeaways, fresh thinking, and a clear focus on better care for patients with retinal disease.

A special shout out to Doheny’s Dr. Michael Ip for putting together an excellent program and Dr. Giulia Corradetti on her first stint as Doheny CME course co-director.

Today’s Doheny Distinguished Lecture Series featured an outstanding presentation by Connie Cepko, PhD, Bullard Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Dr. Cepko’s talk, “Gene-Agnostic Gene Therapy to Preserve Vision,” offered a compelling look at emerging strategies to protect retinal cells and advance treatments for inherited retinal disease. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us in person and on Zoom for a thoughtful and inspiring discussion.

A tiny enzyme may play an unexpected role in how diabetic eye disease begins.

Doheny researchers Mahesh Agarwal, Sathishkumar Chandrakumar, Irene Santiago Tierno, Emma Lessieur, and Kaustabh Ghosh recently published new findings in Diabetes that help explain how diabetic eye disease may start long before symptoms appear.

Their research reveals how excess lysyl oxidase (LOX), a naturally occurring enzyme, can stiffen retinal blood vessels and overactivate immune cells, setting off early damage that leads to diabetic retinopathy. By uncovering this chain reaction, the team is opening the door to earlier detection and future therapies aimed at protecting vision before it’s lost.

Today marks one year since the fires that deeply affected our region.

We pause to remember those who lost homes, businesses, and a sense of normalcy, and to thank the first responders and neighbors who showed extraordinary courage and care. We recognize that recovery takes time, and we continue to hold our community close.

One year later, we remember. We stand with all who lost so much and with those still rebuilding.
