Doheny Eye Institute

Doheny Eye Institute Doheny is a non-profit and top-ranked research, education organization in the field of opthalmology. Mrs. Doheny created the organization named for her.

The Doheny Eye Institute works in a range of innovative ways to improve vision in Los Angeles and around the world. Carrie Estelle Doheny, wife of the prominent Los Angeles oilman Edward L. Doheny, lost the sight in her left eye at the age of 69. Suddenly aware of the precious and delicate nature of the gift of sight, in 1947 Mrs. Today, the Doheny Eye Institute serves thousands of patients in clinics around Los Angeles and Orange Counties and has emerged as a world leader in basic and clinical vision research and advanced patient care. The Institute's innovative research programs continually result in new diagnostic and treatment procedures and are respected internationally for research of the highest caliber, with direct impact on changing lives with improved sight.

Today’s Work-in-Progress meeting featured Peng Shang, PhD, who shared new insights on how the Complement Factor H (Y402H) polymorphism linked to age-related macular degeneration may alter retinal fatty acid metabolism. These sessions spark thoughtful, collegial dialogue and highlight the innovative research happening every day at Doheny Eye Institute as we work to advance vision science.

Today’s Doheny Distinguished Lecture Series featured an outstanding presentation by Connie Cepko, PhD, Bullard Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Dr. Cepko’s talk, “Gene-Agnostic Gene Therapy to Preserve Vision,” offered a compelling look at emerging strategies to protect retinal cells and advance treatments for inherited retinal disease. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us in person and on Zoom for a thoughtful and inspiring discussion.

A tiny enzyme may play an unexpected role in how diabetic eye disease begins.

Doheny researchers Mahesh Agarwal, Sathishkumar Chandrakumar, Irene Santiago Tierno, Emma Lessieur, and Kaustabh Ghosh recently published new findings in Diabetes that help explain how diabetic eye disease may start long before symptoms appear.

Their research reveals how excess lysyl oxidase (LOX), a naturally occurring enzyme, can stiffen retinal blood vessels and overactivate immune cells, setting off early damage that leads to diabetic retinopathy. By uncovering this chain reaction, the team is opening the door to earlier detection and future therapies aimed at protecting vision before it’s lost.

🔬 Discoveries like this bring us closer to preventing vision loss, not just treating it. Read more at doheny.org.

Today marks one year since the fires that deeply affected our region.

We pause to remember those who lost homes, businesses, and a sense of normalcy, and to thank the first responders and neighbors who showed extraordinary courage and care. We recognize that recovery takes time, and we continue to hold our community close.

One year later, we remember. We stand with all who lost so much and with those still rebuilding.

What a joyful way to celebrate the season 🎄

Today, more than 100 staff and faculty from Doheny Eye Institute and Doheny Eye Centers UCLA came together for our annual Doheny Holiday Luncheon.

From a lively photo booth complete with props, to a delicious meal catered by Stonefire Grill, it was a wonderful afternoon filled with laughter, connection, and holiday cheer.

A heartfelt thank-you to the Doheny Human Resources team for making this special celebration possible. We missed most of our colleagues from our Arcadia and Fountain Valley locations and look forward to celebrating together soon.

So grateful for this incredible community and all that we accomplish together throughout the year.

Congratulations to Giulia Corradetti, MD!
We’re excited to share that she’s been selected for the 2026–2027 ARVO Women’s Leadership Development Program, a competitive, year-long experience that supports emerging leaders in vision science. Only a small group of early- to mid-career female scientists is chosen each year, making this a meaningful achievement.

Dr. Corradetti’s selection reflects her growing impact in ophthalmic research and highlights Doheny’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientific leaders.
