Although the holidays can be filled with rituals of another very special kind, usually our regular eating and wellness habits take a break too. Most healthy bodies can withstand a day or two of irregular, heavier meals. Eventually though, the “residue” left behind by sticky, rich, unusual meals can catch up with our digestion… often this leads to something we call “dampness” in eastern medicine. Imagine a greasy pot that you just can’t clean all the way!! Now, imagine your gastrointestinal tract covered in a layer of this slimey residue…
You can actually see evidence of this, more mucus in your nose and throat, a thicker tongue coat, bad morning breath. You may feel it as poor appetite, fatigue, gas, bloating, loose stool or constipation. So how do you eat what you want (mostly) AND suffer less!?
There is hope! Most importantly! Chew your food! Really chew it. Chew it so much that nothing recognizable passes down your throat. Think apple sauce consistency. Chew your soups, smoothies and puddings too 🤤 Your digestion needs the saliva and enzymes stimulated by chewing. Not only that but the action of slowing down and chewing your food will also stimulate other important processes like stomach acid and bile production, as well as proper peristalsis lower down in your gastrointestinal tract.
Next, add a little extra acid to your food. This may seem counterintuitive, but usually, almost all cases of acid reflux stem from not enough stomach acid being produced and your food hanging out in your stomach longer than it otherwise would. Adding a little extra acid to your meal in the form of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (or HCL capsules, the bio identical alternative) will actually help you digest the food and let it leave your your stomach in the right direction. The more you slow down, the more likely you are to produce the perfect amount of stomach acid for your meal.
We are passionate about helping our patients (and ourselves!) enjoy food in all its joys and nourishments. If your digestion is complex, we can help you.
