In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when many developers were leaving Washington, DC, Joe and Larry Horning made a different decision. They saw possibility in neighborhoods others overlooked and in the communities that were rich in history, diversity, and resilience. They committed to building affordable housing and investing in the people who called those neighborhoods home. The Horning brothers understood that thriving communities need more than housing. They need support. Stability. Opportunity. That’s why their work also focused on meeting critical childcare needs for working families, a move that helped to create a foundation for long-term growth.
For generations, Horning has been part of the fabric of the Washington metropolitan area because of that commitment. This article from August 1989 offers a glimpse into Joe Horning’s enduring belief in DC’s neighborhoods and the responsibility to help them thrive. That belief remains our north star at Horning. And just as Joe and Larry did for decades, we will continue to invest in the neighborhoods and the people who make the Washington DC metro area home.
