Beginning Witchcraft - Basic Concepts
Witchcraft is a spiritual practice that emphasizes living in harmony with nature, self-realization and personal empowerment.
If this subject interests you, I hope you will approach it with respect, responsibility and an open mind.
The basic concepts of witchcraft include:
• Intention. Focusing your energy and will to achieve a specific goal.
• Magical Correspondences. Using colors, herbs, symbols and the elements to amplify your intentions.
• Energy. Raising, harnessing, directing and finally releasing your personal energy (and other energies, such as that of the Earth) to manifest change.
• Rituals. Creating meaningful ceremonies to connect with your ancestors, spirit guides and more.
It's not enough to randomly want to be, say, beautiful, rich or powerful. With time, you'll learn that when you set an intention, in order to manifest it, it needs to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time based.
As you grow in your practice, you will come to learn more about magical correspondences.
A good practice is to create and maintain a journal or Book of Shadows in which you develop tables of correspondences - lists or tables of magical correspondences between items belonging to different categories, such as correspondences between certain deities, colors, crystals, heavenly bodies, herbs, incenses, perfumes, plants, and so forth.
While you truly need no tools to practice Witchcraft, you may enjoy using certain basic tools.
These tools include:
• Candles. To represent the Elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) and/or the God and Goddess and/or the Lord and Lady.
• Herbs. To utilize magical correspondences, for example, Basil for love and wealth, Bay for protection, Cinnamon for luck and prosperity, and Lavender for tranquility, sleep and peace.
• Crystals and Gemstones. To tap into their metaphysical properties, which may include healing, scrying and energy work, and for use as amulets, charms and talismans.
You may enjoy creating a permanent altar or seasonal altars to honor your deity, to have representations of the Lord and Lady, to safely burn incense and candles, to hold a mortar and pestle for grinding and mixing herbs and spices, to display your gemstones, and for performing spellwork.
If you are new to Witchcraft, some of the first spells you may consider undertaking include:
• A Protection Spell. Light a white candle, and visualize a protective shield completely surrounding yourself while you repeat: "I am safe, I am protected."
• A Money Spell. Visualize yourself as always having enough money while holding in your hands five fresh basil leaves or a generous pinch of dried basil, then tuck the herbs into your wallet, and repeat monthly.
• A Calming Spell. Blend together lavender and chamomile, inhale deeply, and repeat: "I am calm, I am at peace. All is right in my world."
It is important to respect the craft. Witchcraft is not to be used for "bragging rights" or some perceived "cool" factor.
Nor is it appropriate to use magic to manipulate, threaten or control others.
In fact, it's best that you keep your practice private. No one needs to know that you intend to manifest a job, promotion, lover or anything else in life.
Witchcraft is a personal journey. Trust your instincts, be patient, spend time in nature, read everything you can on the subject, practice responsibly, worship respectfully (although not all Witches are called by Deity), and focus on self-growth.
Turn your interest in Witchcraft in to learning to appreciate the cycles of the Moon, the changing seasons, and the power of natural elements.
You will find that these connections will promote mindfulness and centeredness, and will help you to cultivate a sense of peace, unity and balance with all in the world and in the cosmos.
