"Does struggles with breastfeeding mean my baby has a tongue tie?"

Tongue ties (or tethered oral tissue) are an important piece of the puzzle when discussing struggles with breastfeeding, but they are not the only factor or the root cause.

We must ask the question:

Are there other factors contributing to the struggles during breastfeeding?

90-99% of newborns have been found to have some level of somatic dysfunction or neurological stress due to birth trauma.

Somatic dysfunction impacts the function of the musculoskeletal, nervous and lymphatic systems, resulting in a range of symptoms including struggles with breastfeeding.

Getting your newborn's nervous system assessed by a chiropractor as soon as possible after birth can lead to improvements with breastfeeding and tethered oral tissue.

👅Tongue Ties Aren't Just a Tongue Issue

When talking about tongue ties we must go deeper into physiology and look beyond the tongue.

A tongue tie is most commonly found due to other symptoms that arise.

Common compensation patterns seen in infants with tongue ties include:
- Reflux
- Poor Latch
- Body Tension
- Head Turn Preference
- Missed Milestones

These compensation patterns are not only associated with potential tongue ties but deep neurological stress.

The nervous system is the control center for all function within the body including breathing patters, feeding function, movement coordination, tension (or lack of), cranial nerve function (tongue movement) and brainstem regulation.

When neurological stress is not address and cleared compensation patterns occur within the body.

Neurologically focused chiropractic care supports the nervous system by clearing the neurological stress. By removing the interference within the body proper signals are able to be sent back and forth, resulting in optimal function of the body.

- Decreased Tension
