The ask — one of the hardest parts of needing a kidney.

Not begging.
Not convincing.
Just finding the courage to share what you’re going through.

As Kevin explains, sometimes the people who step forward aren’t family or close friends — and that’s okay.
What matters is being seen.

That’s why APKD created a program to help recipients share their story through short, interactive videos — so no one has to carry this part alone.

Nearly two decades ago, a powerful mission was born:
to save lives by securing a living donor kidney transplant for every patient who needs one.

Founded in 2006, APKD has grown alongside thousands of patients, donors, families, and transplant teams — across the U.S. and around the world.

These photos tell part of that story.
Some are old. Some are recent.
Some were taken close to home, others thousands of miles away.

But they all share the same truth:
real people, real generosity, real lives changed through paired kidney donation.

As we move toward our 20th year, we look back with gratitude — and forward with purpose.
Because the work isn’t finished yet. And the impact continues to grow.

📸 Find yourself in these photos and share it in your stories.
💚 If you’ve been part of these nearly 20 years of APKD, leave us a comment below.

For many children in the U.S., the future depends on a call that hasn’t come yet.

For their families, the challenge isn’t only the wait — it’s finding a way to be heard, to reach the right people, and to ask without fear or exposure.

Wish Upon a Donor ✨ exists to support families in that moment, offering a respectful and effective way to share their story and connect with potential living kidney donors.

You don’t have to be a donor to make a difference.

Sharing, supporting, and spreading awareness can help move a family closer to life-changing news.

Most people don’t know this.
APKD doesn’t only help patients in the U.S.
It also helps make transplants possible across countries 🌎

In some places, like Brazil 🇧🇷, the law does not allow living kidney donation between strangers. That means many patients — even with willing donors — are forced to wait… or stay on dialysis.

Through paired kidney exchange, APKD helped make a three-way transplant possible, turning “not allowed” into lives saved 🙌🏻

This is what happens when innovation meets compassion.
And when helping doesn’t stop at borders.

Living with one kidney — POV: kidney recipient.

For recipients, it’s a second chance.

For donors, it’s an act of generosity that often brings more awareness, intention, and care for their own health.

Kidney paired donation also helps recipients who already have a compatible donor.

Sometimes, a donor–recipient pair is compatible — and still chooses to join an exchange to help hard-to-match patients, such as blood type O recipients or highly sensitized patients.

In return, the original recipient may receive an even better match:
better immunologic compatibility, age or size match, or improved timing.

This is how generosity multiplies.
And how paired donation helps more people — even when compatibility already exists.

We recently hosted an incredible event on the Stanford University campus, bringing together world experts and partners from across the globe. The gathering was a true celebration and explanation of APKD’s work worldwide—showcasing how innovation and collaboration can shape a better future.

This event was made possible by generous funding from the Stanford Impact Lab, whose team also provided amazing hospitality throughout.

We are grateful for our amazing partners who make this work possible. But our mission doesn’t stop here—APKD and our international partners need policy-makers who share our vision and help improve local regulatory environments to support innovation.

The conversations were inspiring! World experts shared their advice and left energized to help drive change. Together, we’re building a future full of possibilities.

Meet Karl, the new APKD intern who will be taking over the social media accounts 🇩🇰📱

Hi everyone,
My name is Karl, and I will be interning with APKD for the next four months. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Business Communication at the University of Southern Denmark, and as part of my program, I have the opportunity to complete an internship.

I am very proud and happy to have been given this opportunity at APKD, as I have a special connection to the company. Two years ago, my father received a kidney through APKD—an opportunity he would not have had in Denmark. The way the organization cared for my dad and his friend, the participating donor Peter, throughout the entire process truly made me appreciate the organization and feel almost like part of the family. That is why I did not hesitate to reach out to Susan about the internship role.

I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to all the learning and amazing experiences I will gain during my time here

Living Donors Save Lives

In the U.S., more than 100,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, but only 17,000 of them will receive a kidney this year. Of those, only 6,000 come from living donors. The Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation is rewriting that story. You can help us bring this vision to life by becoming a living kidney donor, financial supporter or advocate for paired kidney donation. Follow us here on Facebook and @kidneypaireddonation on Instagram, and share our posts to help raise awareness for paired kidney donation.
