We create all our pieces from a porcelain clay formulated and mixed in house, cast in handmade molds, and finished with custom glazes.

Founded in 2014, Felt+Fat is a Philadelphia-based ceramic design and production facility that creates handmade custom ceramic tableware for hospitality and retail customers. Our slip casting process allows for variations in finish and look while retaining negligible differences in size, making each piece of FELT+FAT tableware both unique, while consistent.

Kiln Disaster Update No. 2 - How to help!

It’s been a little over a week since our primary kiln was destroyed and a lot of folks have been asking how to help. We are not accepting donations but right now if you want to support out studio you can -

* Share our story (like / comment / share)
* Purchase a Mystery Box (they come from on-hand stock, so we don’t need a kiln to make more)
* Make a regular purchase and have patience (our lead times will be extended for the next several weeks but we will be back online soon).

What else is new? Last week we shared that the kiln company was going to be here this week to get our small kiln up and running, unfortunately they have been delayed but the kiln should be back up an running by the end of next week, it’s a bummer but we’ll take what we can get!

Furthermore, we spoke with the kiln company and it looks like lead times for replacement are about 7-8 months, a lot better than when we bought the kiln (back then it was over 12 months) so that’s good news!

Finally, we have begun the insurance claim process, I expect it will be weeks before we know much but we are hopeful that our insurance company will cover the cost of a replacement and we are pushing to get revenue loss covered as well. Fingers crossed!

KILN DISASTER UPDATE!

First of all, HUGE thanks to everyone who has reached out so far, it has been really uplifting to hear from you on here, via email, phone calls etc., community really helps pull us through things like this so thank you!

We have great news in that the team from has really come through for us, they have shifted their kiln maintenance schedule to send a tech out next week in order to help get our old kiln up and running so we can keep getting product out the door. It’s a much smaller kiln but it’s a huge help, thanks Jeff + Mike!

Many people have been asking if we are going to start a gofundme or something along those lines - we do not plan to raise money, we believe insurance will cover our losses here but thanks for asking! If you want to help, share our story, make a purchase online and have patience with lead times!

It’s been a rough week but we remain optimistic about the future. Our community is strong and we’ll survive another day to keep making the pottery you know and love.

KILN DISASTER!

Overnight the extreme cold cracked multiple sprinkler heads in our kiln room, causing water to rain down for over 12 hours soaking our huge kiln right in the middle of a glaze firing. The result is a soaked and now frozen kiln covered in ice and an interior utterly ruined by exploded silicon carbide shelves.

Between purchase and installation, this kiln cost us about $300k and has only been in use for 1.5 years. It took a massive amount of effort to put the lending together for this and now we have fully lost our ability to finish products.

Right now we are dealing with the aftermath: documenting damage, speaking with our insurance company etc. We do still have our old kiln, but it is about 1/4 the size and needs to be brought back online. We are hopeful that we can get it up and running again in the coming weeks but in the meantime it’s a dark moment here at Felt+Fat.

The good news is that Mystery Boxes are still shipping (please purchase one to help us out) and we do have a fair amount of stock in various products that are ready to ship.

This disaster means certain items will move to a TBD lead time online, thanks for baring with us! We’ve survived a lot over the years, including Covid, so we’ll get through it.

It’s Nate here, explaining the ins and outs of a Felt+Fat Mystery Box. What’s inside? To begin with, Mystery Boxes typically contain, 3, 6 or 12 items curated by our fulfillment team from categories go either production ‘seconds’, archives or overruns from wholesale production.

These boxes are heavily discounted and a great way to start your collection or to grab a gift for a pottery loving friend! The boxes this time around are going to contain a higher than usual percent for first quality archive and overrun pieces but with the same heavy discount.
