Excited to present "Plagiarism and Copyright in an Age of Content Recycling, AI, and Global Discourse" at the ACES: The Society for Editing San Diego conference with Caitlin O'Brien. I hope you'll join us!

You can review our core objectives and an overview of the topics we'll cover in the slide images.

Date: Sat, April 6
Time: 9:30 am PT

My previous presentations focused on the results of the international survey on plagiarism among writers, editors, and publishing professionals that Andrea Klingler and I completed. This presentation provides a deeper dive into understanding the nuances of plagiarism and copyright, including exploring the role of generative AI.

Full description:
The same weighty word, plagiarism, is applied to everything from confusion about proper paraphrasing to cultural differences to genuinely unethical behavior. This complexity is only amplified by AI, yet almost half of editors have never received professional training on the topic. Join us to discuss plagiarism and copyright myths and assumptions. Learn about the types of plagiarism, possible causes including cultural considerations, and approaches to identifying and communicating about it. Discover what fair use and public domain actually entail, how to evaluate permission needs, the difference between ownership and copyright, and how AI muddies the waters.

So happy the ACES Guide for New Editors has officially launched. I hope editors everywhere find it a useful resource.

Please share it widely! View and download it via the link in the comments.

We included sections on:
—Exploring possibilities
—Launching your career (training, mentorship, advice from experienced editors, and understanding freelance vs. employee options)
—Ethics
—DEI (conscious language and support for editors from marginalized communities)
—International Perspectives (types of Englishes as well as working with multilingual writers, translated text, and localization)

We concluded the guide with a quick checklist for getting started and a curated list of ACES resources.

I started leading the task force in April 2022, and it’s a thrill to see it come to fruition. 🎉🎉🎉 Such a pleasure planning and writing the guide with task force members Lauren Filippini, Crystal Yang Shelley, and Andrea Klingler — who were all part of endeavor from the beginning.

We started with a survey in 2022, and spent the following year writing the guide. A special thanks to Dr. Krishna Kumar Venkitachalam for volunteering to write the International Perspectives section and to Kimberly Grow for auditing relevant ACES assets.

The survey had the largest response to-date of any ACES survey (over 1,000 responses). And this guide is therefore a culmination of generous advice and knowledge sharing from the editorial community at large. Thank you for making this happen!

And kudos to ACES: The Society for Editing for making an accessibility review happen and agreeing to make the guide a publicly available resource.

Thank you to ACES Marketing & Communications Manager Sasha Nyary for your hard work editing it and your excellent queries and to Moniqa Paullet, ADS for your accessibility review.

So happy that ACES: The Society for Editing accepted our session "Making the Invisible Visible: Editors as Changemakers" for the 2024 conference in San Diego. Cynthia Williams, Crystal Yang Shelley, and CaTyra Polland have been doing such amazing work, and I'm so thrilled to collaborate with them on this panel.

Last year, I was asked to help coauthor an article on a clear, inclusive, and accurate approach to collecting demographic information for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in clinical research and medical practice.

I hope you'll give the article a read! There is a table with terms and definitions. It's an open access publication: https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajpheart.00152.2023?fbclid=IwAR1uWMrpzpuZbTZhn-ng7tMj-lrZnm2XhVBD3KY43Ltde5sppoGPLFJg1x8

It was by far one of the highlights of the past year for me, and I'm grateful Jesse Moreira-Bouchard and Karla Haack (the lead authors) included me.

A clear, inclusive, and accurate approach to the collection of demographic information in clinical research and medical practice is critical to understanding the healthcare needs of the specific population. Inclusive demography constitutes appropriate and accurate characterization of an individual.....

Excited to present the panel "Through the Looking Glass: A Different Lens from Disabled, Chronically Ill, and Neurodivergent Editors" for ACES: The Society for Editing with Shannon Scott, Antonn Park, and Kyra Freestar!

At the Sept , we’ll focus on disclosure, accommodations, and complexities as well as how working with disabled and neurodivergent editors offers a different lens on the world that can be beneficial to employers, clients, and other editors alike.

This topic is relevant to all editors because everyone encounters the unexpected and most people experience some measure of disability at some point in their lives.

Anyone else presenting or attending? Hope to see you there!

Thrilled to be selected to speak at the ACES: The Society for Editing March 2023 conference with Toni Willis! We'll present "Beyond Do No Harm: Medical Editing for Inclusivity."

Despite rapid scientific and technological advancements, medical language can be slow to evolve to reflect changing understanding and sensibilities. Although its ideal is to “do no harm,” medicine has a long history of bias and discrimination in practice and research. Medical editors should have an acute understanding of that past and present to form an accurate and transparent approach to inclusive language. This session will focus on what it means to have inclusive medical content and its complexities, how to select appropriate terminology, recommendations for querying, and available resources beyond the AMA style guide.

Hope to see you there!

Andrea Klingler and I presented our session “What Is Plagiarism: Putting Out Fires Around This Hot Topic” at the American Medical Writers Association conference last week. We discussed the results of our international survey on plagiarism (focusing on medical/science communicators) and provided some tips for writers to avoid it and editors to discuss it.

It was our first time presenting at AMWA. I was so glad to see the long line of questions at the end! It was the first in-person AMWA conference in 3 years, and I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity. Such an inspiring event!

Keep an eye on my website for more to come on this topic:

The second photo shows me at the same podium gesticulating while presenting. The third image is the title slide for our presentation. The fourth image shows our slide “Training vs Confidence Among Med Sci Communicators” and shows a graphic that says “Among the 79 medical/science communicators who are extremely or very confident in their understanding of and their ability to avoid/identify it, 26 (33%) had no or intentional-only training.” The last photo shows my conference badge with my name, title as a medical editor, my they/them pronouns, and a “speaker” and “celebrate diversity” patch.
