Pilates Physical Therapy

Pilates Physical Therapy Our mission is to provide a series of social media, blogs, and community outreach events to promote bridging the gap between Pilates and physical therapy.

Pilates Physical Therapy is NOT currently a site, but rather a small business PLAN in the works. However, we are aiming towards building a site in the future. We are currently two doctorate of physical therapy students with 450+ hour classical Pilates certifications. Pilates Physical Therapy is being developed as part of our capstone and our business plan, which is being submitted to APTA's Private Practice Section. We are aiming towards starting as independent contractors through development of a community outreach project for our capstone, which will implement Pilates based rehabilitation to neuromuscular patient populations.

In honor of March MATness and MS Awareness Month, Sarah worked with on a blog post exploring current research in this population. ALL the articles included mat work, some mat work only! A more in depth look into the research will be posted to our own blog in the near future but for now a few highlights are available on the mageerehab.org blog! _________________________________________________

✨PilatesPT of the Month✨Our very own Dr. Blair Nettles, PT, DPT. Blair is a licensed physical therapist in the state of Virginia and currently works in a unique setting treating residents of Lansdowne Woods. She provides physical therapy services to a wide variety of individuals age 55 and older. Her passion lies in outpatient rehabilitation with an emphasis on treating the geriatric population and individuals with chronic neurological conditions. Watching her mother with a spinal cord injury strive to regain function and independence had a profound impact on her pursuit to become a physical therapist who works primarily with the geriatric and neurological populations.🧠Blair graduated from Christopher Newport University in 2012 with a degree in Biology and minor in Dance. Following undergrad, she ended up teaching Pilates-based exercise as a rehab technician in an outpatient physical therapy clinic, which ultimately lead her to pursue a 500-hour comprehensive pilates certification through Peak Pilates before attending graduate school and completing her doctorate degree in physical therapy in 2017 from Thomas Jefferson University. During her time at TJU, she attended APTA student conclaves and combined sections meetings with Sarah McMahon, providing inspiration to co-found PilatesPT.👯‍♀️Blair’s passion for Pilates inspired her to start her own Pilates business in 2013 called Purely Pilates VA, LLC. She currently teaches private and duet sessions out of two home studios located in Warrenton and Ashburn, VA.🌟Website coming early 2019🌟Blair is a strong supporter in global posture re-education training and exercise that encompasses whole body integration for optimal outcomes, which is why she is a firm believer in the power of Pilates for rehabilitation!👀Keep an eye out for her upcoming blog post on Pilates for Parkinson’s!🧠

Throwback Thursday to teaser Tuesday in Thailand (that’s almost a tongue twister!) Although many Pilates exercises like the teaser may not seem functional at first glance, the latest pilates research published by Carrasco-poyatos Et. Al. (just last week!) shows that Pilates is significantly better than traditional muscular strengthening programs in improving functional conditions and cognitive function in older women. However, this study favored traditional strengthening for static balance in older women. _________________________________________________

Did you know Van Gogh’s “A Starry Night” included a teaser?! 😜 A 2011 study by Phrompaet et. al. shows pilates exercises such as the teaser significantly improve lumbopelvic stability and flexibility. This is partially due to frequent dynamic stretches which talks about in her blog post we are publishing this week! Stay tuned 🤓

🎉Pilates PT of the Month 🎉 Dr. Amy McIver, PT, DPT! Amy was introduced to Pilates early on as a complement to her classical ballet training. She graduated in 2001 with a BS in Kinesiotherapy from the University of Southern Mississippi and a DPT degree in 2004 from The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. She was introduced to, and fell in love with, Pilates Rehab while interning with Jennifer Gamboa at Body Dynamics in Arlington, VA.
As a Licensed Physical Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor, Amy has been practicing Pilates-based PT for 13+ years. She founded In Balance PT, LLC in 2006 in Wilmington, NC, and subsequently transferred her practice to Jacksonville Beach, FL. Amy underwent an intensive classical Pilates Certification in 2005 and has completed multiple other Pilates training courses through PHI, Polestar, APPI and Balanced Body. She has attended extensive continuing education courses and has practiced a wide variety of physical therapy techniques including, but not limited to manual, orthopedic, sport related, vestibular, neurological and pediatric therapies. Over the past year her studio has expanded to include 4 PT’s, 2 RYT’s, and a massage therapist. In Balance offers one-on-one, semi-private and small group Low Impact Fitness Training (L.I.F.T.) by way of Pilates, Yoga and gentle weight training. The studio embrace’s the motto, “We want to L.I.F.T. you up, not break your down”.
Besides helping clients through Pilates and PT, Amy loves traveling and exploring “what’s next” with her husband and son. She also loves playing in her organic garden and trying new recipes. Keep an eye out for her guest blog post on how Pilates can be used as a dynamic stretch for improved flexibility, mobility, and function 💪💃
