Herlyn Lab Dr. Meenhard Herlyn's laboratory focuses on the biology that underlies melanoma, the most aggressive

Dr. Meenhard Herlyn’s laboratory at The Wistar Institute focuses on the biology that underlies melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. His efforts have pioneered the use of the three-dimensional “artificial skin” tumor cultures to study the behavior of both tumors and the other cells that sustain tumor growth, a system known as the tumor microenvironment. The Herlyn Laboratory has transformed the scientific understanding of stem cells as they relate to cancer, and their work on the networks of signaling pathways in melanoma has formed the basis of numerous therapies now development or currently under clinical trial.

It is with a heavy heart we share the news of the untimely passing of our dear colleague and friend, Rajasekharan (Shyam) Somasundaram. He was a pillar at Wistar for almost 32 years, best known for his time in the lab of Dr. Dorothee Herlyn until she retired, then moving to us. Shyam was an accomplished scientist and beloved colleague to many, both at Wistar as well as the wider national and international scientific community. Many words have been used to describe him: mentor, guide, inspiring, wise, gracious, modest, gentleman, friend, and like family. We could dwell in this loss, but we know this is not what Shyam would have wanted. Instead, we'll honor his memory and legacy by working even harder to meet the goals he had committed his career to achieving. We're proud to have worked with him and grateful for his contributions. Our deepest sympathies go out to Shyam's family, his friends, and everyone in the science community who are mourning his passing. All of us in the lab miss him terribly and he will forever remain in our hearts.

The next several days will look like this for us in the Philadelphia area but that doesn't mean that we're safe from damaging UV rays. Don't skimp on sunscreen! ☔️

It's a new year and our friends at the Melanoma Research Foundation are asking you to take the pledge to ! As we know, melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. But you can greatly reduce your chances by creating good habits starting today!

1. Check your entire body for unusual or new spots. With regular self-exams, you'll learn what is "normal" for your body, and what is not.

2. Examine your skin care routine. There are lots of great SPF products including lotions, clothing, and more to keep your skin protected!

2. Make an appointment with a dermatologist. Early detection could save your life!

3. Encourage others to too!

Thanks to Dr. Weeraratna for another great reminder of ways to keep safe in the sun not just tomorrow but all year!

We at Wistar hope you have a happy and safe 4th of July. If you’re planning on spending some fun in the sun, be sure to protect your skin from by wearing a hat and applying broad spectrum sunscreen that is at least 30+ SPF, as advised by our research expert and advocate Dr. Ashani Weeraratna.

While weather in Philadelphia is a little unpredictable of late, what is a fact is that without protection, your skin is at risk for more than just melanoma. If you haven't seen a dermatologist lately, now is a great time to make an appointment! 😎

This past Sunday, Wistar held its inaugural Champion Run for Research, a 2K walk/run from Wistar to the Art Museum. Just over $5000 was raised to support our trainees. Members from the Herlyn lab, along with other Wistar employees and friends/family enjoyed a brisk but beautiful morning helping raise funds for a worthy cause. Congrats to all!

This past Saturday, we held our annual Cutaneous Oncology Retreat at Wistar. We had almost 80 people join us for this dynamic day of science! This is the highest attendance in many years. Our speakers consisted of seasoned veterans to some up-and-coming young scientists from Wistar, UPenn, and Temple, covering a broad range of topics including epigenetics, immune biology and metabolism. Thank you to all who helped make this year's retreat a success!

Our Story

The Herlyn laboratory at The Wistar Institute focuses on the biology that underlies melanoma. Our efforts have pioneered the use of the three-dimensional “artificial skin” cultures to study the behavior of both tumor and normal cells that sustain tumor growth, a system known as the tumor microenvironment. The Herlyn Laboratory has transformed the scientific understanding of stem cells as they relate to cancer, and their work on the networks of signaling pathways in melanoma has formed the basis of numerous therapies now in clinical trials or very recently approved. Please see our website for more information on the exciting work we’re doing.
