FOCUS…the word of the day: Mind-Body-Spirit!

Good day folks!

Quick share—have you ever experienced or heard of mindful eating? Well here it is:

5 Tips for Mindful Eating

Slow down…

The average American spends two and a half hours each day eating, but more than half that time, we’re doing something else, too: looking at a screen, fussing with our kids, or maybe finishing up some last-minute laundry or office work.

That multitasking distracts us from what we’re eating, which isn’t great for us physically or emotionally. Mindful eating can help.

Simply put, mindful eating means staying in the present moment while you eat and noting the feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations that may arise. It’s simpler than you may think. These steps will walk you through the process.

Take a deep breath before you start eating.

This will help you relax — and gives you an opportunity to assess how you feel. Ask yourself: How hungry are you? Could you be eating because of an emotion like stress or boredom? Based on your answers, you might decide to wait until later to eat or prepare yourself a smaller plate.

Think about your food.

Imagine that you need to describe what you’re about to eat to someone else. What does your food look like? How does it smell? Once you take a bite, what flavors do you taste and which textures do you notice?

Again, go slow.

Eating slowly helps you recognize when you feel satisfied. Try to chew each bite thoroughly. In between bites, put down your fork or spoon, or have a sip of water (tiny tummy folks dont sip water until afterwards)

Check in with yourself.

Throughout your meal, reassess. Do you feel full or are you still hungry? Are you continuing to enjoy your food, or have you become more focused on finishing what you have left? Give yourself permission to stop eating at any time. You can always save this food for later.

Enjoy the last bite as much as the first.

Remember how you took time to taste, smell, and savor your food when you first began to eat? Try to do the same with the last bite on your plate — especially if you’re really enjoying your meal.

Mindful eating takes practice. If you find yourself distracted, eating quickly, or left with a “too full” feeling, be kind to yourself. The next time you’re hungry, you can try mindful eating again!

Thank me later…
