Language has always evolved as our understanding deepens.

I am grateful to all the educators and mentors who have dedicated their careers to expanding the terms used in esthetics - so that it better reflects the incredible diversity of human skin.

To me, equitable skincare means making sure every client feels seen, centered, and not measured against an invisible standard. A big portion of my work supports free facials, donation-based services, and education for the volunteer estheticians doing the work. Because equity isn’t just a concept — it’s a daily practice.

ESTHYS: When we say ‘darker’ as a default descriptor, darker than what? Compared to whom? What’s the baseline? I will continue to advocate for EQUITY in the esthetics industry and it starts with our perspective, individually and collectively. We must stay to think globally and stop unconsciously “othering” our clients.
