🙏🏽Thank You Notes..Yay or Nay 🙏🏽
😎 Happy 2026! As interview season continues, many students start wondering, if thank you notes are absolutely necessary. Here are somethings to consider as you move forward
👀Are they absolutely required? Likely not, but if you are so inclined, then yes a thank you note is a fine demonstration of courtesy/appreciation
💬Do they change your rank position? Likely not. Many programs will rank applicants immediately after interviews are done, so it may be hard to get them sent before that occurs
👌🏽How can they help? Sending a note of appreciation and interest in a given program, can help further build your network, stay connected and keep programs engaged.
👣Do you need to say where you are ranking a given program in your thank you note ? No. It is not necessary to say this. However, using the note to review points of interest in a program is likely more valuable !
🙌🏽 in my mind, I think you note is probably not the best way to stay connected; sending emails to establish relationships that can be carry forward into your career I believe is more beneficial, long-term. The people that you are interviewing with, meeting and having conversations with , are likely to be longtime colleagues, partners and friends. That being said, developing these relationships and using a thank you note to help start the conversation and start that relationship is a better thing in my opinion.
💪🏾Keep these things in mind as you get through interviews and best of luck !

👥 Mentorship is one of the most important roles of a senior orthopaedic resident. There are many ways to serve as a mentor, not only to junior residents but also medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery. These include both clinical and non-clinical activities, such as helping develop surgical skills, clinical decision-making, research opportunities, social outings, and more. Effective mentorship has the potential to shape the skills, confidence, and long-term development of junior trainees, and is a critical part of becoming a leader as one progresses through residency and beyond.

👥 Transition into senior residency means increased clinical responsibility, operative autonomy, and leadership expectations. Among these, I found mentorship to be one of the most meaningful and impactful aspects of the role. Effective mentorship strengthens team dynamics, improves patient care, and fosters a culture of continuous learning. The following principles are some key lessons I learned from my senior residents as a junior trainee and what I now strive to practice as a senior resident myself.
1Teaching and Mentorship
As a senior resident, it is important to guide junior residents not only through daily tasks but also to ensure the team progresses meaningfully through the rotation. Verbalizing thought processes during decision-making, explaining the rationale behind clinical choices, or walking a resident through the steps of a surgical approach are roles that senior resident should actively take.
