The Accent Authority

The Accent Authority Dr. Amee P. Shah: Award-winning leader and pioneer in managing accents & cross-cultural communication through best practices.

Everyone has their own unique speech accent, and accents are a beautiful mark of us! However, depending on where you are and whom you are talking to, at times, your accent or dialect can cause difficulty communication and/or put you at a disadvantage. I have spent over 20 years of dedicated effort in understanding the processes that empower and connect speakers and listeners from different language and dialect backgrounds around the world. My research as a speech scientist and clinical practice as a speech pathologist lead me to establish the EBAM Institute, L.L.C, where we develop and offer programs and services related to Evidence-Based Accent Management (TM). At EBAM Institute, we develop and implement scientifically-tested, data-driven communication programs to break down barriers arising from cultural and linguistic differences for individuals and organizations. We are committed to helping individuals learn to communicate past the barriers of their accents, regional dialects, and cultural differences. Our commitment also extends to training clinical practitioners and teachers to offer proven best practices to their culturally-diverse clients. Our research and customized solutions improve organizational communications and create inclusiveness.

This is “literally” the kind of stuff that comes up in our communication coaching sessions! English is infuriating for nonnative speakers…but there is hope! 👍Systematic guidance can speed up the process and reduce the frustration!

70 medical departments, 32 different countries and speakers of 58 languages served in 5 years!

Today we completed the analysis of the last 5 years of Cross-Cultural Communication Enhancement that I conduct in hospitals as part of my research and clinical leadership.

This program helped reduce communication barriers during one of the most challenging times in medical history due to the pandemic. Metrics of Patient Safety, Patient Satisfaction, Employee Retention, Equitable Care, and Employee Engagement are among others that have consistently improved. We were able to save jobs during one of the highest turnover times.

I am proud to say Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging are not mere buzzwords—when organizations are responsive, true transformation is possible!!

One of the best part of my days is to empower powerful leaders through communication enhancement.

Received this note from a Chief Staff Neurology VP in a hospital:

Amee: Thank you for the thoughtful session. I am so blessed to have you in my circle. I highly value your input and especially the feedback to handle the challenging discussions. I literally look forward to our weekly sessions. Thank you for all that you do to make us better, stronger and be more human leaders. Have a great weekend.

Signing in from the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association’s national convention in New Orleans! We have had the most provocative conference this year with a lot of talk around demarginalizing and decolonizing our field! FINALLY!! Well, yours truly is strongly representing and fighting the good fight for the way accents and dialects are treated in our field! The continued politics and ignorance around these issues has inspired me to get more vocal again! And to reconnect clinicians and researchers with the informed and evidence-based tools and methods, so stay tuned as I will be posting more on social media.

So today, I want to ask you, do you still care about issues of accents and dialects? Do you still want to stay on this page? Please share what your interest is in this topic so I can bring you more curated information. Or just shoutbout and say hello! I will remove those who are not interested so as to not spam you with things that don’t matter to you on this page. Thanks for reading this far!
