Whatโ€™s the difference between IBS and IBD? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) are both gastrointestinal disorders that cause digestive upset.

So, apart from the last letter of their names, whatโ€™s the difference? Letโ€™s take a look: ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿ”ธ๐ˆ๐๐’:
IBS is believed to result from a combination of factors, including altered gut motility, visceral hypersensitivity, and psychosocial factors. It is considered a functional gastrointestinal disorder, meaning there is no structural or biochemical abnormality that can be identified through routine medical tests.

๐Ÿ”น๐ˆ๐๐ƒ:
IBD encompasses two major conditions: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, and its primary etiology is believed to involve an abnormal immune response to the gut microbiota in genetically susceptible individuals.

Common symptoms of IBS include:

Symptoms of IBD can be similar to those of IBS, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating. However, there is evidence of inflammation and structural damage in the gastrointestinal tract, which can be observed through endoscopic examinations and imaging studies.

Diagnosis of IBS is primarily based on clinical criteria. There are no specific laboratory tests or imaging studies that can definitively diagnose IBS. With IBD, diagnosis involves a combination of:

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ๐€๐ง๐ ๐›๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ

In summary, the key difference between IBS and IBD lies in the fact that IBS is considered a functional disorder with no visible pathology, while IBD involves chronic inflammation and structural changes in the gut.

"Change your thoughts and you change your world." - Norman Vincent Peale
Ever had a bad thought that changed the outcome of your entire day? Iโ€™m pretty sure all of us can relate! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
โœด๏ธ This is a prime example of how powerful the mind really is. โœด๏ธ
The quote above highlights the importance of mindset and the power of our thoughts in shaping our experiences and outcomes in life.
โ†ช๏ธ The truth is that our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves, our bodies, and our health can have a significant impact on our actions and behaviors.
โ†ช๏ธ For example, if we believe that we are not capable of achieving our health goals or that we are not worthy of good health, we may be less likely to take actions that support our health, such as:
๐Ÿ”นEating well
๐Ÿ”นExercising regularly
๐Ÿ”นAnd managing stress.
On the other hand, if we adopt a mindset of self-compassion and self-efficacy, we may be more motivated to take positive steps towards improving our health and wellbeing.
Additionally, our thoughts and beliefs can impact our stress levels and overall mental health, which in turn can have an impact on our physical health. Negative thoughts and stress can contribute to inflammation in the body, which is associated with a range of health conditions, including:
๐Ÿ”ธHeart disease
๐Ÿ”ธDiabetes
๐Ÿ”ธAnd depression.
By simply changing your thoughts, you can change your entire world. ๐ŸŒŽ

The TOP 7 nutrient deficiencies associated with mood disorders: โฌ‡
โœณ๏ธ Vitamin D
Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of several neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which plays a key role in regulating mood. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to changes in brain structure and function that may contribute to mood disorders.
โœณ๏ธ B Vitamins
B vitamins are involved in the production of neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine, which regulate mood and emotions. Deficiencies in B vitamins can lead to imbalances in these neurotransmitters, which can contribute to mood disorders.
โœณ๏ธ Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are involved in the structure and function of brain cells, and deficiencies can lead to changes in brain function that contribute to mood disorders. Omega-3 fatty acids also play a role in the production of neurotransmitters that regulate mood and emotions.
โœณ๏ธ Magnesium
Low levels of magnesium can lead to imbalances in neurotransmitters and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, contributing to mood disorders.
โœณ๏ธ Iron
Low levels of iron have been associated with depression and anxiety. Iron is involved in the production of neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, and deficiencies can lead to imbalances in these neurotransmitters that contribute to mood disorders.
โœณ๏ธ Zinc
Zinc is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters and can affect the activity of the HPA axis. Low levels of zinc can lead to imbalances in neurotransmitters and dysregulation of the HPA axis, contributing to mood disorders.
โœณ๏ธ Vitamin C
Low levels of vitamin C have been linked to depression and anxiety. Vitamin C is involved in the production of neurotransmitters, including serotonin, and deficiencies can lead to imbalances in these neurotransmitters that contribute to mood disorders.

Why is taking care of your brain so important? Well, one thing is certain: As we age, risks to brain health increase.

Did you know that one in four adults will experience a stroke in their lifetime? And that every five years, after the age of 65, the risk of Alzheimerโ€™s doubles?
Perhaps the most shocking statistic out of the CDC shows that 77.4 % of adults aged 45 - 65+ with at least 1 chronic disease show a significant cognitive decline compared to just 22.6 % with no chronic disease (88.3 % being female)

Despite this scary thought, there is some good news. There are many things we can do to help protect our brain health long before we reach this point.
By looking after our physical body before we experience problems, we can reduce our risk of chronic disease and cognitive decline.

Things like a healthy diet, exercise, proper supplementation and mental stimulation to help the brain stay sharp are just some of the ways you can optimize your brain health today!

Simple, healthy changes to the diet like adding more variety of fruits and vegetables can improve blood pressure and heart health thanks to help from your microbiome.

Eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables helps increase the diversity of bacteria in the gut. The gut microbiome plays a key role in digestion, absorption of nutrients, and many other factors of overall health.

Recent studies find that a healthy and diverse gut microbiome helps the body metabolize flavonoids, antioxidant compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods, making them more bioavailable. The study results showed an improvement in blood pressure, lowering the risk of future heart disease.

Flavonoids can be found in everything from berries, apples, and pears, to kale, broccoli, bell peppers, dark chocolate, green tea, and even wine!
