Public Comment and Personal experience MATTERS. Tell your story and educate our elected officials on how this option would effect your daily life. Those who make the rules to decide what is and is not of “Medical Necessity” need to hear from US, the ones with lived experience.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has just opened up a public comment period for seat elevation and says a comment period on standing devices will open at a later date. To submit comments directly to CMS by the September 14 deadline, click here: https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/view/ncacal-tracking-sheet.aspx?ncaid=309

United Spinal and others have demanded that CMS allow wheelchair users to submit comments on both seat elevation and standing devices. United Spinal is a steering committee member of the ITEM Coalition. For more information on seat elevation and standing devices, visit the ITEM Coalition’s Rise4Access website at https://www.rise4access.org/submit-a-comment

As I investigate the lack of accessibility in housing; and the lack of initiative in community/county planning as a whole- I become more curious to hear the stories and struggles that other chair users face.

I’m interested in hearing stories of accessibility and inclusion in your neck of the woods. If you have had difficulty finding housing, I want to hear the hurdles you’ve gone through.

YOUR stories matter, our stories matter. Please help me conduct a study to showcase the issues at hand. If you have something to say, please email me with your specific hurdles:

samantha@parafulmission.org

A list of example below:

Apartment Accessibility without the help of government assistance.
- What was your experience?
- Did you have trouble finding a place?
- Was that complex open to accessibility changes for you specifically?
- What modifications had to be made (if any)

Some examples of hurdles:
-Bathroom ability
-Laundry room (front loader vs top loader)
-Ramps in and out vs steps
-Door width
-Kitchen appliances (stoves, foot space)
-Closet space / reach

Apartment Accessibility within government assistance (how long were you on a waiting list, what were the hurdles along the way)

Does your county have a board, a council or a point of contact for accessibility within housing? If so, how long did it take to find something fitting.

Affordability

Proof of income while on SSDI- was that enough to get you accepted as a tenant?

Accessibility in new construction is more likely to find, but new construction also costs more monthly. Has anyone found new construction that is accessible AND affordable?

Any and all information & experiences are welcomed. I want to hear YOUR personal story. This digital world we live in now gives our community a platform that we did not have before.

Collectively Collecting our experiences as we roll through life, will give more opportunity for future SCIs and wheelchair users to come.

Figure It Out... the phrase that my coaches have instilled in me, the words that keep me determined, the phrase that eliminates, “I can’t” from my vocabulary.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Here, we have a cluster of my every day fitness essentials, along with my custom pool steps that were made for me SPECIFICALLY to my measurements.
I see so many comments from wheelchair users who are seeking a routine. My best advice is to first prepare your mind. Your health is a journey, retraining your mind should be #1. I suggest my followers gather some equipment first... then give yourself one hour a day to develop a healthy routine. The BEST advice I can give you was given to me as well- if you commit to a 40 day routine- that routine will become a habit. Once that habit is engrained in your mind; you will find yourself making that habit a PRIORITY. Putting too much pressure on yourself is an appetite for destruction. This is a journey, not a race!!

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!

The spinal cord is THE most precious part of your body. Throughout life- we are knocked off balance. Sports, lifting, office work, driving, laborers, DOCTORS, moms, scoliosis/ sciatica/ hernia patients, babies... injured or not, WE ALL need preventative maintenance.

Follow Functional Patterns- these corrections will elevate pain and pressure. Your every day movements create more of an imbalance then you think, then you could POSSIBLY imagine. Open your mind and be free of critical thinking... study Functional Patterns Kevin Kuddar

To my family & friends
To my gyms, coaches & training partners
To the people who have supported my holiday fundraising & those who have personally supported my recovery...

To not only SCI patients- but to ALL Traumatic Survivors who have lost mobility in one way or another. The stroke patients, amputees & especially to our Soldiers (US, CANADIAN & UK) who’ve suffered, learned and lost mobility.

To the victims who have yet to be... this mission is for you.
I have worked, collaborated and lived through this life for over a decade. I have struggled to own and accept- even when it seems that I don’t. I want this world to be a better, and more inclusive place for you. People are endlessly trying to make that happen, nothing will ever be perfect...

Just remember you are strong
You should be proud
And you, are Powerful.

Thank you to my entire world, for letting me live through this life, with the endless support that I’ve had. Now help me have the back of others, there is so much that the world needs to know.

Paraful Mission, Inc

This year, for Spinal Cord Awareness Month, my goal was to launch my 4 + year project in the making. After 11 + years of Paralysis, I am so excited to finally announce my Non-Profit Vision for the future of SCI’s all over.

Paraful Mission Inc, was born to guide, inspire & motivate those who have been affected by a traumatic spinal cord injury. Life does not have to stop when tragedy hits. We may lack certain abilities, but there is NO limit to what we can accomplish! Recovery will be a never ending fight physically, mentally & financially, but our mission and community won’t let you and your loved ones fight alone.

Fitness, Boxing & Functional Patterns have been a MAJOR part of my recovery, that being said, these things comes with a cost. Along with Secondary Rehabilitation at places like Project Walk, NONE of these programs are covered by insurance. Paraful Mission, Inc has created Scholarship Funds for individuals who want to continue their road to recovery, but could use some assistance to do so. All monetary donations we receive will go directly into our Scholarship Fund and individuals will be chosen based on Application Order

My vision was to create this portal of information for those navigating through paralysis. Here, is where we share resources, create mentorship opportunities, and showcase Wheelchair Warriors who are out there making moves! Together, we will raise awareness, and together we will be STRONG, we will be PROUD, and we will be POWERFUL
