ICYMI: Imagine taking a pill before heading to Thanksgiving dinner and being protected from an allergic reaction! Northwestern Medicine researchers identified an FDA-approved asthma drug (zileuton) that could block allergic reactions. They dosed peanut-allergic mice with zileuton before feeding them peanuts and reversed their reaction risk from 95% susceptible to 95% protected. Learn about:
—The research breakthrough that led to zileuton.
—Human trial plans + timing...and much more

I know, I haven't posted in a WHILE. Life has been busier than the normal busy, but I wanted to share this article because it's something I've often wondered.

TLDR: acorns are thought to be safe for people with tree nuts to handle. If you're still concerned, washing your hands with soap and water after handling an acorn should rid any chance of a reaction after handling acorns.

If a child is allergic to tree nuts, are they able to touch acorns? Should they avoid them to be safe? Can they cause allergic reactions?

Three scientists, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their groundbreaking discoveries about how the immune system distinguishes between harmful invaders and the body’s own cells. Their work on peripheral immune tolerance and the discovery of regulatory T cells has transformed their understanding of immune regulation and autoimmune disease. This research also deepens scientific insight into conditions like food allergies, where the immune system mistakenly identifies safe foods as threats. By uncovering how immune tolerance is maintained, their findings open new possibilities for preventing and treating immune-related conditions, from Type 1 diabetes and lupus to food allergies and beyond. At FARE, we celebrate this milestone as a reminder of how fundamental immunology research drives innovation and hope for millions living with food allergies. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3J3qEaK

A new blood-based diagnostic test may transform how food allergies are identified. With support from a FARE research grant, scientists are developing a next-generation basophil activation test (BAT) that can assess reactivity to multiple allergens using just a small blood sample, potentially reducing the need for oral food challenges.
While still in the research phase, this simplified and scalable test could lead to faster diagnoses, less patient anxiety, and fewer unnecessary food avoidances. FARE is proud to support innovations that move us closer to safer, more accessible food allergy care. Read more here: https://bit.ly/45PsLYX Healio

Mayim Bialik,

PLEASE host an episode featuring this horrific disorder that is taking our children from us with very little medical resources available to treat them!

Mayim mentioned on an episode that featured her mom as a guest that her mother had PANDAS as a child. As a parent whose child has struggled with this horrific disorder for 5 years, with no mainstream medical help available, I am BEGGING Mayim to feature PANS/PANDAS on an episode of her podcast Mayim Bialik's Breakdown to spread awareness!

Where is the only place I have ever taken my food allergy kiddo where I felt relaxed and completely safe? The answer my surprise you...

Mexico! Many people would never dream of placing their allergy child’s lives in the hands of an international chef (the language barrier! the availability of safe brands! The UNKOWN!). A registered nutritionist at CHOP gave me the best tip, very early on in my kiddos’ life. Travel. To. All-inclusives! Their chefs are all specially trained to accommodate food allergies! Why? Because, as we all know, the word of mouth among allergy parents is WORTH GOLD!

I have been taking my kiddo to the same resort chain for 8 years. Every decent resort chain abroad will have the same standard, but it’s good to do some homework before booking (and once you do book, contact the head chef before your arrival with your dietary needs!). You will have the best trip of your life!

29 allergy-friendly hotels in Mexico where you can truly relax on your vacation! From all-inclusive resorts to hotels with safe restaurants, beachside delivery, and room service, our Top Rated Mexico Hotel Guide is your ticket to paradise whether you’re going on Spring Break, planning holiday trav...

My heart breaks…

"Charlotte isn’t here to tell her story so I will do it for her. Charlotte was diagnosed with food allergies at 5 weeks of age after a hospital stay for failure to thrive and widespread eczema that had gotten out of control. After formula adjustments and a strict diet as a baby/toddler, we started to get the hang of life with food allergies. Charlotte was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis at 18 months old. Fast forward a few years, and Charlotte started kindergarten. She always brought her lunch to school and became used to being unable to eat treats & goodies at birthday parties. There were times she developed phobias about eating especially if she was trying something new. If you knew Charlotte well, you knew of her food allergies as she wasn’t shy about sharing her story. Charlotte passed away on October 3, 2022 after a severe anaphylactic episode 6 days before 's profile picture. To honor Charlotte’s memory & continue to advocate for others, I am sharing to spread awareness about the seriousness of life-threatening food allergies and anaphylaxis."

So disappointing!

Allergic Living finds adding sesame to bread products a growing practice to skirt new U.S. allergen law. Nonprofits are upset, concerned.
