U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) convened more than 55 tribal maternal health experts and organizations, including the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC), to develop a comprehensive roadmap to improve maternal health outcomes for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.
The effort resulted in five reports highlighting severe disparities in maternal mortality, workforce inequities, limited access to culturally appropriate care, data sovereignty challenges, and chronic underfunding. The reports call for federal action to expand postpartum coverage, strengthen the maternal health workforce, improve safety and mental health supports, and protect Tribal data sovereignty.
“AABC endorses access to high-quality, culturally congruent maternal health care and support services for American Indians, Native Alaskans, and Native Hawaiians as reflected in this groundbreaking report,” said Jill Alliman, DNP, CNM, of AABC Government Affairs Chair. “The report outlines direct steps that Congress can take to improve health. Thank you, Senator Luján, and Nicolle Arthun, CNM, for your vision.”
