What Made You Feel Spectacular This Week?

Not productive.
Not busy.
Spectacular.

That moment when you felt most energized, motivated, or proud?

It might be your nervous system--and your wisdom--telling you what you need more of.

When life is full of goals, obligations, and transitions, resilience isn't about just pushing through. Sometimes it's about noticing what lights you up . . . and giving yourself permission to do more of that.

So pause for a moment.

What did you do this week that made you feel spectacular?

And what would happen if you did more of that again next week?

Share in the comments--or keep it as a promise to yourself.

Are You Finding It Hard to Be Optimistic?

One of the gifts of a new year is the sense of a fresh start—an invitation to renew hope, optimism, energy, and motivation. As we move further into January, you’ve probably started on your goals for the year—whether related to work, health, relationships, or self-care. If so, that’s worth acknowledging. Starting matters!

And yet, for many of us, January doesn’t always go exactly as planned. Obstacles pop up, frustrations build, and it’s easy to lose momentum—especially when things feel outside of your control. Ugh!

Here’s the reminder we all need: fresh starts aren’t limited to January 1st. You can claim one anytime, especially after a setback. You’re allowed a do-over. You’re allowed some grace.

Optimism isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s that inner light that helps you keep looking for options, solutions, and next steps—even when
things feel hard.

This week, choose one concern or intention close to your heart and take one small step forward. Notice what happens. Let that be your fresh start.

“Optimism doesn’t mean that you are blind to reality. It means that you remain motivated to seek solutions.” — The Dalai Lama

Bonus: If you’d like some extra support, listen to the Honestly Aging Vigr® Podcast from Friends Life Care, where I appear as the featured guest. We talk about how resilience helps you feel more grounded and in control when things don’t go as planned.

Tune in to see how resilience supports fresh starts and builds optimism!

How Do You Make a Life for Yourself?

In life, we spend a great deal of time thinking about and planning how to make a living. What are my skills? What fields are hot? Lucrative? What do I like to do? How can I make a good living and take care of myself, have nice things, travel, enjoy?

Rightfully so, there’s considerable doingness and focus on “me” when we contemplate how to make a living. But does all of this make for a happy life? We hope so! But are we overlooking another aspect that makes our lives especially rewarding?

Enter another question in the equation: How do I make a life for myself? To do this, we need to focus on “them”. What impact do I want to have? How do I want to be remembered? How can I make a difference in the lives of family, friends, and even strangers? How can I be of service?

As Martin Luther King, Jr. Day approaches, I invite you to add these questions to your list. When you prioritize your answers, you open the path to create the kind of life you’ve always wanted.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” - Winston Churchill

In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, what’s one way you can give to others or your community next week? Please comment and let me know what you decide to do Go for it!.

How to Make 2026 Your Year

Each year, we make New Year's resolutions to achieve new goals, be more healthy, be more productive, and be a better person in one way or another. Sound about right? But what if you approached things a little differently this year. What if you told yourself … 2026 IS MY TIME TO: ✨

Believe in myself.
Make plans to reach my goals.
Stop taking “no” for an answer.
Take action on what excites me.
Climb walls I “can’t” climb.
Face problems I “can’t” defeat.
Quit habits that don’t serve me.
Create habits that DO serve me.
Celebrate my strengths.
Learn from my mistakes.
Stop being afraid to fail.
Stop hiding!

THIS IS YOUR TIME ✨

As you continue to enjoy the festive season, take a moment to focus on a powerful way to make the holidays even more meaningful: the joy of giving yourself! By embracing acts of kindness, you can foster a sense of community that extends far beyond your own celebration.

Being kind is the most generous gift you can give—and the best part is, it’s completely free! We know that being alone during the holidays can be especially difficult. Look for opportunities to bridge that gap for others. Consider how you might spread a little extra cheer:

• Extend an Invitation: If you or someone you know will be alone this year, invite them to join your holiday meal.
• Show Gratitude: Drop off baked goods to your local fire department or police station and thank the first responders who keep your community safe.
• Practice Patience and Put Yourself Second: Give up your spot in a long shopping line, hold the door open for someone whose arms are filled with packages, or find a local organization where you can volunteer for a fresh perspective on the season.

As you look for ways to help others, remember to exercise self-compassion, too. It's essential to take care of your own spirit; it provides the foundation you need to show genuine compassion to those around you.

Whose life will you change today with an act of kindness?

"Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person's life." -Jackie Chan

As wonderful as the holidays are, they can also be incredibly difficult when you are missing a loved one. Whether you are navigating your first holiday without them or have been on this journey for years, the weight of that absence is real.

It is okay to feel both joy and deep sadness at the same time. In fact, research shows that the more willing you are to accept your feelings rather than push them away, the more effectively you can heal. Allow yourself the space to cry if you need to; it is a vital pathway to your well-being.

You can also use your creativity to honor those who are missing from your table this year. Finding small, tangible ways to include them can bring a sense of comfort and peace. Here are a few ways to keep them close:

- Bring out the "good stuff": Use your late mother’s china to add a touch of her elegance to the meal.

- Wear a memory: Put on a loved one’s favorite piece of jewelry or a signature scarf to keep them "with" you all day.

- A seat for the heart: Place a photo of a deployed grandchild or a distant relative at the table so they’re part of the conversation.

- Celebrate the quirks: Share those "remember when" stories—especially the funny ones that always make the room laugh.

By weaving these memories into your current traditions, you keep their spirit alive and a part of your celebration.

What's one small happy way you can honor a missing loved one this holiday season?

"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us." — Helen Keller

12/19/2025

There’s no doubt that 2025 was a continued journey of adaptation and growth; a year of creating new solutions in the face of rising prices, job losses, changing policies, and a government shutdown. Our times have made it a necessity to move forward in novel ways, to put our creativity to work, and to focus on the end result we desire vs. marinating on those things we can’t control. When we take the time to reflect, we allow ourselves to see how far we’ve come, to celebrate that, and quite importantly to acknowledge those who helped us get there.

Research reminds us that practicing gratitude is one of the best gifts we can give as it strengthens our physical and emotional well-being and that of others. Given the holidays, let’s put gratitude at the top of our lists for what we give this season. I’ll get us started!

First, I’m grateful to my clients for their motivation and perseverance to make important shifts in their lives – I’m continually inspired by your commitment! Without you, I could not have earned the renewal of my Professional Certified Coach credential. Thank you for your confidence and trust in me, and for allowing me to be your “thinking partner” as you chart new territory.

Thank you to those who embraced my new programs! In my Masterclass for Resilience, we practiced a 7-step process for developing positive habits, and learned how the right habits, sleep, and curiosity add to our resilience. In my Webinar, Take Back Control: How to Build Resilience to Calm the Chaos in Your Life, 115 people signed up to learn 3 easy-to-implement skills to build resilience and regain control over unpredictable change in your lives. Also, many thanks for sharing how you look forward to your weekly “shot of resilience” in my Weekly Newsletter! So glad it gives you a lift!

This year, I learned more about neuroscience, or brain science, and the added value it brought to my coaching. By understanding how the brain functions optimally, you can achieve behavioral changes more quickly and easily with remarkable results! Many thanks to James Garrett’s Brain by Design trainings.

To my colleagues, I’m especially grateful to Lisa Burn, Her Path, and Heather Scurti, Slutsky Elder Law, who managed the logistics for my Take Back Control Webinars so capably. Many thanks to Katherine Rosenblatt, Professional Daughter for Hire, for helping my clients with caregiving needs. And thanks to Lindsay Reichard, Friends Life Care, as we worked on resilience programming for them.

To additional colleagues, I’m forever grateful for your collaboration, brainstorming, and continued encouragement to “go for it”. Tremendous thanks to leaders of Life Planning Network, Joyce Cohen, Bruce Frankel, and Barbara Shaiman. Also, much gratitude to Joyce Cohen and Vicki Thomas of My Future Purpose, Wendy Green, Hey Boomer Podcast, Terri Phillips, and to Judy Lobis for bringing How to Be Resilient Through Unexpected Change, Loss, and Uncertainty Workshop to Green Hill Condos.

To my outstanding Marketing Manager, Kaitlyn Hill, of Constant Contact, thanks for your responsiveness, positive work ethic, and technical expertise – what a difference you make!

Finally, to my family, thank you for your unending love, support, and encouragement. Last month, we lost my brother-in-law, Harry Zacharjasz. Harry was one of a kind and we will love him and miss him forever. Our family grew, too, with the birth of our granddaughter, Selena (aka Lena, our bambina) who makes us happy every day! Shelly and Devin, you’ve adapted to parenthood seamlessly, all while Shelly opened her Executive Function Coaching practice for children with ADHD, autism, and other neurodiverse conditions. We’re so proud of you both!

To Mindy, you continue to do it all so well as a Mom, Director at Penn, and technical savior! And to our grandson Shane, and grand-pups Watson and Nugget, thanks for filling our lives with so much love and laughter! To our nieces and nephew, Shai, Lily, and Becky Korman, thank you for producing your movie! The Floaters, a coming-of-age film about Jewish overnight camp, that is warming hearts across the country. We're so proud of you! And finally, to my husband, Mario, thanks for being my best cheerleader and the love of my life. I love waking up next to you every day!

As you reflect on your 2025, I hope you will give pause and embrace the highs and lows you may have experienced. Learn from them, relish them, and move forward because of them. Please take time to thank those who have helped with your journey this year. Practicing gratitude is the gift that just keeps on giving. As we approach the Winter Solstice on December 21, the longest night of the year, challenge any darkness you may experience knowing there will be more light in your life each day going forward.

Wishing you good health, connection, and purpose in the New Year - the best is yet to come!

How can you keep the holidays simple this season?

As the holiday season picks up, remember that done is better than perfect. Letting go of perfection can help you navigate holiday stress with more calm and ease.

So, where in your life can you let go, just a little bit?

Consider this: Can store-bought cookies be just as satisfying as homemade ones? Can your everyday dishes work instead of your good china? How about paper napkins instead of cloth ones? Can “good enough” be acceptable in some areas? Embracing imperfection allows you to focus more on what really matters -- spending quality time with loved ones.

Research shows that true joy comes from how we feel inside, not how much we do. This season, manage your expectations, take breaks when needed, and give yourself the gift of simplicity. You'll thank yourself for doing so!

"Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure." — Oprah Winfrey

What will your theme be this holiday season to help you manage stress?

The holiday season is a time of excitement and anticipation, but it can also bring overwhelming stress
and unattainable expectations. What should I get my partner that will totally surprise them? How can I make the most delicious meal ever? How can I make sure everyone gets along and has the best time?

Create a theme for yourself to manage holiday stress!

What’s most important to you this holiday season? Replenishment and rest? Fun? Quality family time? Being present, calm? Whatever it is, jot it down and let it be your guiding principle as you decide what to do or not do. Let go of past holidays and look to the future. Changes are a part of life. This type of self-regulation enables you to make good choices that are aligned with your current priorities and helps prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

How can you contribute in these difficult times?

As we approach Thanksgiving, we often pause to count our blessings, but this year, that pause feels more crucial than ever.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the world, wondering how one individual can possibly help. Yet, the true spirit of resilience and the holidays is found in grounding ourselves in gratitude and purposeful action, right where we are.

"Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." — Desmond Tutu

This Thanksgiving week, as you gather with family and friends, what intentional act of kindness or connection can you contribute?

The world needs your little bits of good now more than ever.

How to Ramp Up This Fall Despite So Much Uncertainty: A Mini-Series

The transition from the slower days of summer to the accelerated rigor of Fall often leaves our emotional energy running on empty. If you're currently feeling stretched, drained, or finding it hard to cope with unpredictable routines and financial anxieties, it's time to stop powering through and start refueling. Our resilience isn't infinite; it needs to be recharged by positive human interaction.

In this week's mini series, How to Ramp Up This Fall Despite So Much Uncertainty, we are tackling emotional maintenance head-on, sharing two essential practices to boost and strengthen your resilience: Connecting with Loved Ones and embracing the profound Gift of Kindness.

Connect with Loved Ones

Fall is filled with opportunities for connection and fun. Bonfires, apple-picking, hayrides, football games, and festive holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving invite us to spend meaningful time with others. Even the anticipation of these events boosts happiness. When you connect with loved ones, you not only strengthen relationships, but you also reinforce emotional resilience and fend off loneliness. Make time to gather, celebrate, and build special memories!

The Gift of Kindness

Kindness is one of the most powerful and accessible ways to boost resilience and your ability to shift gears quickly when needed. Whether you give or receive it, kindness releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and endorphins, enhancing your well-being and reducing stress. Small acts such as offering help, expressing gratitude, or giving a compliment can make a huge difference. Being kind redirects focus outward, lightens your emotional load, and even benefits your physical health. Want to feel stronger and happier? Practice kindness daily, it’s a gift that keeps on giving!

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." — Dalai Lama

• Who haven't you spoken to in a while who could benefit from a spontaneous 15-minute call from you this week?

• What is one small, unsolicited act of appreciation (e.g., a thank-you email, a compliment, or a cup of coffee just the way they like it) can you give a colleague, friend, or stranger this week?
