The most important factor for therapist is to relate to people as people. Be a full human and consider the clients as full humans. ( (Image: Philly skyline in a art filter. text: Dear Therapist,
Who are you willing to other?
Who are you willing to ignore?
Who are you willing to sacrifice?
Do you see yourself as separate from the clients, from people across the sea, from people you don't understand?
If you forsake one of us, you forsake us all. We are all in this world together.)

This was discussed while planning for a panel on Decolonizing Mental Health Care happening 10/12 at Igleseias Gardens to benefit .roots.foundation to fund food for families in G❤️z❤️. https://www.instagram.com/p/DPZEt_sjd9f/?img_index=1 None of these concepts are my own, but I know that lots of people don't hear things that aren't said by other white people, so hear we are. I wish I remembered what I learned from who, but my brain fog is in the way. ( (Image: Philly skyline, no filter. text Dear white people of means: Do not bastardize these concepts to serve your own comfort.
"Rest is resistance" and self care:
"Look away" 30 minutes before bed, not all day.
Bring snacks to the action, not stay home.
De-center yourself, don't take up too much space: Listen first, then speak up in support.
This is not an excuse to be silent.
Cultural appropriation:
This doesn't absolve you of learning about and respecting other people's cultures. (Looking at you, music therapists who don't learn genres that make you uncomfortable.)

Certain people feel left out when the people who are actually left out get their needs recognized. That's a shame in general, but absolutely unacceptable for therapists. Understanding how our "justice" system actually works is crucial for therapists in supporting survivors, so we can understand the gravity of their situations, believe them, and support their recovery and safety. (Image: Philly skyline in a mosaic filter. text: Clinical experience tells me that cops are more likely to perpetrate intimate partner and sexual violence than prevent it or seek justice.
Consider that when you're supporting survivors. )
