This was discussed while planning for a panel on Decolonizing Mental Health Care happening 10/12 at Igleseias Gardens to benefit .roots.foundation to fund food for families in G❤️z❤️. https://www.instagram.com/p/DPZEt_sjd9f/?img_index=1 None of these concepts are my own, but I know that lots of people don't hear things that aren't said by other white people, so hear we are. I wish I remembered what I learned from who, but my brain fog is in the way. "Rest is resistance" and self care:
"Look away" 30 minutes before bed, not all day.
Bring snacks to the action, not stay home.
De-center yourself, don't take up too much space: Listen first, then speak up in support.
This is not an excuse to be silent.
Cultural appropriation:
This doesn't absolve you of learning about and respecting other people's cultures. (Looking at you, music therapists who don't learn genres that make you uncomfortable.)

Certain people feel left out when the people who are actually left out get their needs recognized. That's a shame in general, but absolutely unacceptable for therapists. We need to always follow the client's lead when advocating with them or for them. What we think is helpful isn't always actually helpful and our actions can cause blowback on the clients. So, being careful, we have a responsibility to address the source of stressors that have harmful health effects. (IMage: Philly skyline from west in a cartoon filter. • Headache from broken air con- talk to maintenance
• Nausea from meds- talk to the doctor
