Full Living: Psychotherapy Practice

Full Living is prepared to meet your needs with a full range of modalities, including individual, couples, family and group therapies. We are able to assist in coordinating Psychiatric services, Psychological testing, and referral services for other needs including Nutritional Counseling, EMDR treatment, and more. Full Living works exclusively with seasoned clinicians designed to ensure high quality of services. Our clients receive a free initial consultation with our Founder/Director, Karen Smith, MSS, LCSW, in order for her to connect them with well-matched clinician(s), whom she personally selects and supervises. Full Living prioritizes working with clinicians who have engaged a broad range of people, of different backgrounds, with varying belief systems and life experiences.Cultural competency and LGBTQI sensitivities cannot be taught; it is built on a life well lived by people with an open and flexible mind. Full Living clinicians work together to provide each other with ongoing consultation, peer supervision, and case collaboration. When more than one member of a family is engaged in therapy with Full Living, our clinicians
work collaboratively to provide integrated, informed services. Full Living clinicians have offices through-out Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs to best facilitate a convenient location for services. Holidays really do disrupt us. And the people around us. And our kids, our schedules, our self-care rituals, our responsibilities. For folx in the US, starting at Thanksgiving and spiraling through until the end of the calendar year, American life has a very different rhythm/ pace/ sets of responsibilities/ schedule/ travel/ disruption.

So, dont overthink stuff right now! Right now is not good thinking/ processing/ metabolizing time about any of the big topics that have been stirred up. This isnt when we journal about our existential angst, nor try to assess if we are getting a divorce, or if we really are the worst parent.. Now is the time for self-soothing, self-care, a kind and gentle approach to yourself. Even about the ways you have spun out/ been shrill or otherwize assholish.

It isn’t you. It isn’t them. It is just the holiday season :)

Now, later in January, when you come up for air, if you are not in therapy, just do it. It seriously helps. If you are in PA, I can help you connect with the right therapist. If you aren’t in PA, find an actual outpatient psychotherapy practice in your town, where the therapists know each other and can help you connect with the right kind of therapy and therapist for YOU.

My boy, in Central Park, turning 18.

His birthday is filling me with nostalgia, thinking about all possibilities and opportunities and whole lives he’ll get to live.

At 61 I have chosen and crafted many eras. There has surely been hardship and tragedy, but also just some very different frames and adventures.

Partnered twice for a decade each, and single now coming on 16 years. I had some great child free decades of adulthood, years as a single parent, and am now entering a less parent-focused frame of my own life.

I had years when my family of origin was a burden at the fort front of my life, years where I established distance, and am now a decade in to family being a soft place to lean.

My professional life has had some constants, but also opportunities to dive into decade long interests, and then to move on.

While the importance of friends and community have always been key, both the people and the ways I like to be with people change radically.

My time alone, what self care looks like, what matters and gets valued and prioritized….all moving targets. Thank goodness!

To my boy, and all of you… Live and try and build and taste and craft as many frames and opportunities as you can in this short life.

One of my favorite X-files episodes starred Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin as Maurice and Lyda, married ghosts who had killed each other on Christmas Eve, and haunt their house every year on that night, which Mulder and Scully visit.

MAURICE: Oh, of all days, why did you pick Christmas? Why not Halloween?

LYDA: Now, who is filled with hopelessness and futility on Halloween? Christmas comes but once a year.

MAURICE: You’re right. These two do seem pretty miserable. We need to show them just how lonely Christmas can be.

LYDA: Now that’s the old Yuletide spirit.

Don’t be fooled. Highs in thrill and hopefulness can be met full on with moments of despair and apathy. Be prepared to weather the storm :)

Interestingly clients rarely schedule sessions over the thick of the holidays. The “reason” is tight and busy schedules. But wow. The holiday season deserves some psychotherapy support! Schedule with your therapist!

And if you dont have one, now is the time. Put some elbow grease into your hopes for the New Year. Contact us in you are in PA www.fullliving.com

I am all about increasing the moments I call happy, content and joyful. For me the collection of holidays over the dark winter that invite us to bring in the light are sources of delight. But also stress. And disappointment. Exhaustion. Rage. Conflict.

Rather than enter the holiday with ideal dreams, I think it is worth just trying to catch some of the great magic in the air, and assume that it comes with a mix of regular life, plus!

If you find yourself struggling over the holidays, remember, we put a lot of weight on these days. If you are realizing you need extra support, make an appointment for a free consultation so I can help connect you to a well matched therapist. www.fullliving.com

Get a free digital copy of my book on Amazon this Friday the 19th and Saturday 20th. My colleague Sandra L. Newes, Ph.D. is starting a new cycle of her KAP programming for clinicians and since I am making it available to them, let me make it available all around!

This guidebook is a must have for clinicians working with ketamine assisted psychotherapy, but is also a great way for all mental health professionals to familiarize themselves with the landscape of this emerging field. Get your copy and make sure your psychedelically curious therapist friends get their copy too!

And if you are interested in onboarding ketamine assisted psychotherapy into your outpatient practice, start with a free consultation with me :)

Checking in with yourself, getting and keeping yourself centered and grounded throughout the day, is no easy task, but worth our devotion. You may have to experiment with what works for you...deep breathing, dancing around the house, journal writing, stretching outside, ect.

But sometimes the way to radically shift our energy is just any action any activity, anything you can “accomplish”. Accomplishment, successfully taking care of some of your business, is an absolute mood changer.

Finding and Making Paths with KAP: A Supervision Group

I am currently working on a follow-up guide book to [Prepare Yourself, Your Client, and Your Practice for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy: A Step by Step Guide](https://www.amazon.com/Prepare-Practice.../dp/1962133370...) exploring the range of ways psychotherapists are using ketamine to work with their clients. From clinicians like me who go hard-core on the non-directive by barely engaging their clients during journeys to psychelytic dosing talk and dance sessions. This is a group of differently trained clinicians, trained and using KAP in different protocols and frames. Come help us build an understanding of what works and how.
· Pre-requisite includes prior KAP training* and current KAP client(s)
· Date of Upcoming Sessions: 1/6, 1/20, 2/3, 2/17, 3/3/11, 3/17
· Up to 9 CEUs based on attendance
Here is the design:
· Virtual every other week Tuesday 10 am to 11:30 am
· $360 for 6 sessions over 3 months
· 9 CEU available each cycle (for sessions attended)
· Participants restricted to psychotherapists trained in KAP*
· Maximum of 8 participants
· My practice frame is analytically oriented psychotherapy. Group participants will bring their own frames to the group for sharing

Format for the group will provide opportunity for a couple participants each week to bring their client, question, concern to a discussion. We will identify the theme to help everyone link into the convo. Here is what I mean:
· Bill brings in a case where the client is struggling to drop in, or has a lackluster session, or imagines they aren’t really getting anything out of KAP. We will unpack the particular case, but if we all have the themes in mind, it is easier to get help on our cases at the same time. We won’t be doing anything like thorough formal case presentations.
· Barbara’s client is starting to bubble over in rage at her family during the week between KAP session. We will think about dislodged emotions, how we help clients manage new feelings/truths surfacing while discussing Barbara’s client, so that we all have our cases in mind as well.
· Baxter isn’t sure how to use the lucid dream of the experience to understand how to help the client. While talking about that client’s experience, we will explore how to understand the symbolism and somatic experiences of the medicine and post-medicine experience in understanding client journeys.

The group runs for 90 minutes. The first 75 minutes are the group. The remaining 15 minutes are for folx who want to stay on who have practical/ procedural questions about KAP practice.

*This is not a training in KAP. There will be opportunities for tons of basic questions to the group, since we all work so differently, and are all learning new things every day in this rapidly evolving industry. But this program assumes participants have enough of a KAP knowledge base and frame to be actively working with KAP clients, even if only a couple. We are looking to deep dive into the psychotherapy parts of ketamine assisted psychotherapy. The fact that we bring different clinical approaches and different frames for KAP itself is what makes this group so rich.

If you are interested, lets schedule a consultation to see if this group is the right fit for you. [info@fullliving.com](mailto:info@fullliving.com) or [www.fullliving.com](http://www.fullliving.com/)
