Conflict Pro-tip: Space and time aid resolution.

No fight can get resolved in one sitting. When two people enter a conflict, they come with radically different points of view and need sets.
Round one, the fight, alerts each party to the disconnect, themes, issues, points of contention. But then they both need some private time to digest the fight, to think and feel about it, to get centered enough and calm their defensive reactivity down enough for a thoughtful contemplation of the relational issue.
Enter round 2, with some acknowledgments or apologies related to revelations in the first round, some clarifications about what we realized is now going on, new enraging points of contention, ect. Then some air/space/time (walks are good, doing the dishes, hanging out and processing with other people, journaling, zoning out to tv, calming down your nervous system, ect.)
Round 3. This is the one with a real shot of resolution. The first two rounds helped hammer out all the key points and so by round 3, it is time to make sure both people have felt heard, both people have apologised for their role, and connection re-established.
It is really okay that it takes 3 solid rounds to get there. And you really do make it worse if you try to resolve it in one round.

Psychotherapy isnt always lovely. People come to therapy because they are in pain. We can soothe them for sure, but we are there to help people locate their sources of pain and build strategies for how to handle them over our lifetimes. In the beginning of thearpy, it is great if it feels good and you get lots of support and validation from your therapist, but eventually you want to get to the sessions where you are talking about stuff you would rather avoid even thinking about. You will be defensive, angry, hurt, uncomfortable, might feel unheard. Let’s not idealize therapy and change. If just a good dose of a loving, relaxing hour were enough to heal us, we wouldn’t need to go to folx trained to help us with all the knots.

DW Winnicott offered psychoanalytic object relation theory world the language of Environmental Mother, Holding Environment and the Good-Enough Mother, among many other rich concepts centered in the care of the young infant/toddler.While unfortunately gendered language, the concepts of environmental parenting and holding environment are language to describe that invisible labor we like to talk about. Winnicott gave language and shape to the functions we deliver when we are creating a “safe space”.
