Ukemi — Japanese for “falling without harm.”

Falls are one of the biggest risks to independence as we get older, but how we fall matters just as much as preventing the fall itself.

Learning to fall safely can reduce the risk of serious injuries like broken hips, wrists, or head trauma. Simple skills — such as protecting the head, relaxing the body, and rolling instead of bracing — can make a huge difference when slips happen unexpectedly.

Safe-falling techniques build confidence, improve balance awareness, and help older adults stay active rather than fearful of movement.
