This conversation with Denise Schonwald really highlighted something I see all the time in my work.

Denise is a former ICU nurse turned mental health counselor and author who bridges physical health, emotional healing, and spiritual awareness.

At one point she said:
“The body is always being cued by the mind…”

And what felt important to name is how much our field is expanding to include all layers of what it means to be a human being.

Because what we’re understanding now is:

👉 the nervous system is constantly reading the environment
👉 responding automatically, often outside of awareness
👉 and then the mind steps in to make meaning out of that response

And once the mind tells a story…
the body follows that too.

That’s how these patterns become so persistent.

If you’ve ever wondered why insight alone doesn’t create change—this is the conversation.

Most people don’t talk about the freeze response.

The moment your body just… stops.
No fighting back. No running. Just stillness.

Nahum Vizakis was a bomb disposal technician in Baghdad when it happened to him.

And the shame he carried after that moment lasted years.

What I want you to hear is this.

Your body didn’t betray you.
It made a split-second decision to keep you alive using the only option it calculated would work.

You don’t choose to freeze.
Your nervous system chooses for you.

If you’ve been carrying shame about a moment your body went quiet when you wanted it to act, this episode is for you.

Did you miss this one? 👀 Where are my mind-body people…

I’m still thinking about this conversation with Nahum Vizakis.

We talked about trauma, the nervous system, fear, biohacking… and this idea of “spiritual bodybuilding.”

And here’s what keeps landing for me—

👉 What does it actually mean to build strength in a trauma-informed way?
👉 How do we work with the body without overriding the nervous system?
👉 Where’s the line between growth… and pushing too hard?

This feels especially alive for me right now because in May I’m going to be leaning more into conversations around:

mind-body healing
trauma-informed personal training
trauma-informed bodybuilding
and what it really looks like to work with the body, not against it

If you haven’t listened yet, this is a good one to start with.

And if you have—what stayed with you? What didn’t land? What do you want us to go deeper on?

We’re doing a follow-up episode in a few weeks and I’d love to bring your questions into it.

Just dropped 🎙️ Where are my embodied folks?

This was one of those conversations where I knew right away… there was no way we were covering it all in one episode.

I sat down with Nahum Vizakis and we started with his story—
trauma, the nervous system, fear, biohacking, spirituality… and this idea of “spiritual bodybuilding.”

What I appreciated most is that underneath all of it, we kept coming back to something I talk about all the time:

👉 your nervous system
👉 your capacity for discomfort
👉 and what it actually means to build yourself from the inside out

In Nahum’s book, The Biohacker’s Guide to Spiritual Bodybuilding, he writes:
“To understand bodybuilding deeply is to recognize it not only as sport or spectacle, but as a spiritual forge—a modern form of ritualized self-mastery.”

We’re doing a follow-up episode focused on this concept—and we want your questions.

If you listen and something comes up, email me:

One last thing - this episode is kicking off a series beginning in May of folks who focus on Mind-Body connection. Stay tuned for more!

This stopped me mid-conversation.

We were talking about psychodrama and do-overs.
The idea that you can revisit a moment.
Say the thing you never got to say.
Receive the goodbye, the apology, the witness you needed and didn’t get.

And I asked: but isn’t the nervous system smart enough to know it’s not “real”?

Nope.

Your nervous system doesn’t file things under real or pretend. It files things under experienced or not.

Which means the do-over works.
The imagined conversation matters.
The wish-for ending your body never got to have... it can have it now.

This is the foundation of psychodrama, and it’s one of the most hopeful things I’ve heard in a long time.

Karen Carnabucci () has been doing this work since 1989, and she is generous and brilliant.

Karen said this almost in passing, and I wanted to pause the whole conversation.

Urgency is a trauma response.

The rushing.
The need to fix it fast.
The pressure to feel better by next Tuesday.
The frustration when progress doesn’t look like a straight line.

That urgency? It’s not ambition. It’s not a drive. It’s the nervous system in survival mode, trying to outrun discomfort.

And when we bring that urgency into the therapy room, into healing work, into our own self-development... we end up recreating the very conditions that made the wound in the first place.

Go slow. Build safety. Let warm-up matter.

That’s not a detour. That’s the work.

I’ve been doing nervous system work for a long time, and this conversation with Blakey Hastings shifted something, and to it’s not even something new or something I didn’t know, I’m honestly aware of it, but for a long time, I am not sure how to express or say it until she put it together.

Breathwork is a spectrum. From the most basic functional breath all the way to expanded states of consciousness that look a lot like what people used to seek out through psychedelic therapy.

And the reason most people don’t experience real transformation from it isn’t that they’re doing something wrong.

It’s that their nervous system doesn’t have the capacity yet to hold what comes up. Which means the experience happens. And then it just sits there.

This is the same thing I see in therapy. Insight without integration doesn’t move anything. Your body has to be able to hold the experience for it to become something you carry differently.

Save this one. The full conversation with Blakey is in the link in bio. ❤️

So many new faces here and with this I want to introduce you to something close to my heart.

The Spiritually Curious Therapist is a podcast exploring the space where nervous system science, mental health, spirituality, and healing meet, and sometimes challenge one another.

It’s a space for therapists, healers, and curious humans who sense that true healing happens below the level of insight alone. Through conversations and reflections, we explore trauma, chronic pain and illness, regulation, meaning-making, and what it really takes for the nervous system to feel safe enough to change.

This isn’t about bypassing science or romanticizing spirituality.
It’s about listening differently to symptoms, to stories, and to the body’s innate intelligence.

If you’ve ever felt like traditional frameworks didn’t quite go far enough, this space was created with you in mind.

Most healing tools work on you.

The breath works with you.

You set the pace. You decide how deep. And if you ever feel like you’ve gone too far, you just breathe through your nose and you’re back.

No waiting for the medicine to wear off. No holding on until someone else says it’s over.

You are always in control.

This is what Blakey Hastings means when she says the person is 100% of the time holding the reins. And it’s one of the most quietly powerful things about breathwork that nobody talks about.

The healing doesn’t come from surrendering control. It comes from finally feeling safe enough to use it.
