A meaningful and impactful week at the Weinberg ALS Center.

This past week reminded us how strong the neuroscience community is when we move forward together.

We began with the Walk to End ALS, standing alongside families, caregivers, and supporters. Soon after, we joined international colleagues from Sheba Medical Center (Israel) and Gemelli/Cattolica University (Italy) for a 3-day Symposium hosted by Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience Jefferson Health. Together, we exchanged insights across brain diseases—including ALS, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and MS—advancing shared understanding in science and clinical care.
Later in the week, at the Life Sciences PA Patient Summit, Dr. Pasinelli joined a thoughtful conversation with Dr. Daniela Zarnescu (Penn State Hershey), our friend living with ALS, ALS United Mid-Atlantic, and State Representative Kyle J. Mullins highlighting why research, advocacy, and collaboration remain essential. We then closed the week at a heartfelt luncheon hosted by ALS United Mid-Atlantic, where Senator Chris C***s joined attendees in honoring individuals and families living with ALS.

ALS doesn’t recognize borders or politics, and it leaves no room for silos. Our progress depends on working together—across institutions, states, and countries.

We are grateful to our colleagues and collaborators; we are grateful for the people living with ALS who work tirelessly as research ambassadors to advocate for the community and share their stories. We are grateful to Representative Kyle Mullins, our partners across Pennsylvania, and Governor Josh Shapiro for supporting the $5M appropriation dedicated to neurodegenerative disease research. This investment brings hope and momentum to all working toward better treatments.

🎉 Big Congratulations to Matt’s Place Foundation and Miller Hull Partnership for being winners of the 2025 Metropolis Planet Positive Awards in the Impact on Health & Wellness category for their inspiring project Matt’s Place 2.0! 🏡💙
Here’s why this is so powerful, especially for those impacted by ALS:

✨ Purpose-built for dignity & independence. Matt’s Place 2.0 is a prefabricated, modular, mass-timber home prototype designed specifically to meet the unique needs of people navigating a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

✨ Smart, accessible design. The home’s main-floor suite is built for the occupant’s ease: wheelchair accessible throughout the lower level, rooms for family/-caregivers upstairs, an L-shaped layout with a protected carport and comfy transition from vehicle to home.

✨ Technology for autonomy. It’s equipped with smart tech tailored to ALS needs, e.g., home control systems that can be operated solely by eye movements, helping maintain independence when mobility becomes more limited.

✨ Community & home-life balance. While the design keeps the patient together with family, it also preserves their own dignity and private zone. Important for quality of life as ALS progresses.
We’re so proud of this recognition because this is not just architecture, it’s human-centered design at its best. One that supports real lives, real challenges, with empathy and innovation.

🔖 Let’s celebrate the impact of design in health and wellness!

Heading home feeling inspired after an incredible few days at the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS) Annual Meeting in Florida!

We kicked things off with the CRLI program. Congratulations to the newest class of Research Ambassadors! The week continued with engaging lectures, updates on clinical trials, insightful poster sessions, and meaningful conversations with colleagues and friends.
Of course, we made time for a little fun too. The Comicon-themed evening brought some creative energy, with the Weinberg team making an appearance as the Mystic Inc.

Thanks to NEALS for another excellent and educational meeting. Until next year!

We’re proud to share that our Director, Dr. Piera Pasinelli, served as one of the faculty instructors and two members of our Weinberg ALS Center (one PT and and one caregiver) joined this year’s class of 34 participants to become Research Ambassadors.

CRLI takes place just two days before the start of the NEALS Annual Symposium, which officially kicked off today! Many from the Jefferson Weinberg ALS Center are attending this year and one of our CRLI graduates is even staying through the meeting.

We’re so proud to see our team and community members continuing to shape the future of ALS research and advocacy 💙🧠

Eric Dane is speaking out and refusing to accept the status quo. 💪 He’s joining forces with I AM ALS to launch the Push for Progress campaign; a bold initiative to raise $1 billion over the next three years for ALS treatments and research.

Thank you Eric Dane for bringing hope and pushing for the breakthroughs that people living with ALS deserve.

🧪 Last week, three of our Principal Investigators and two of our PhD candidates had the exciting opportunity to attend the Gordon Research Conference, where they presented their research in both formal presentations and poster sessions.

This prestigious conference brought together top minds in the field, and we’re incredibly proud of our team for representing the Weinberg ALS Center with such dedication and excellence.

👏 Join us in celebrating their hard work and continued contributions to ALS research!
