Our Weinberg ALS Center family gathered last week for Friendsgiving, and it reminded us just how grateful we are for the incredible people who make this community so special, from our caregivers and clinicians to our researchers, staff, and supporters.

As we head into Thanksgiving, we wish you and your loved ones a joyful and restful holiday. Thank you for being part of our ongoing mission to advance research, provide compassionate care, and continue the fight against ALS. 💙🧠✨

Tonight, on this first day of Thanksgiving week, we are grateful to Eric Dane, who guest-stars in the newest episode of Brilliant Minds as a firefighter diagnosed with ALS.

We are thankful to Eric for using his talent to raise awareness and bring honesty and heart to this important story. His performance helps shine a light on the challenges faced by people living with ALS, their families and everyone who supports them.

A meaningful and impactful week at the Weinberg ALS Center.

This past week reminded us how strong the neuroscience community is when we move forward together.

We began with the Walk to End ALS, standing alongside families, caregivers, and supporters. Soon after, we joined international colleagues from Sheba Medical Center (Israel) and Gemelli/Cattolica University (Italy) for a 3-day Symposium hosted by Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience Jefferson Health. Together, we exchanged insights across brain diseases—including ALS, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and MS—advancing shared understanding in science and clinical care.
Later in the week, at the Life Sciences PA Patient Summit, Dr. Pasinelli joined a thoughtful conversation with Dr. Daniela Zarnescu (Penn State Hershey), our friend living with ALS, ALS United Mid-Atlantic, and State Representative Kyle J. Mullins highlighting why research, advocacy, and collaboration remain essential. We then closed the week at a heartfelt luncheon hosted by ALS United Mid-Atlantic, where Senator Chris C***s joined attendees in honoring individuals and families living with ALS.

ALS doesn’t recognize borders or politics, and it leaves no room for silos. Our progress depends on working together—across institutions, states, and countries.

We are grateful to our colleagues and collaborators; we are grateful for the people living with ALS who work tirelessly as research ambassadors to advocate for the community and share their stories. We are grateful to Representative Kyle Mullins, our partners across Pennsylvania, and Governor Josh Shapiro for supporting the $5M appropriation dedicated to neurodegenerative disease research. This investment brings hope and momentum to all working toward better treatments.

🎉 Big Congratulations to Matt’s Place Foundation and Miller Hull Partnership for being winners of the 2025 Metropolis Planet Positive Awards in the Impact on Health & Wellness category for their inspiring project Matt’s Place 2.0! 🏡💙
Here’s why this is so powerful, especially for those impacted by ALS:

✨ Purpose-built for dignity & independence. Matt’s Place 2.0 is a prefabricated, modular, mass-timber home prototype designed specifically to meet the unique needs of people navigating a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

✨ Smart, accessible design. The home’s main-floor suite is built for the occupant’s ease: wheelchair accessible throughout the lower level, rooms for family/-caregivers upstairs, an L-shaped layout with a protected carport and comfy transition from vehicle to home.

✨ Technology for autonomy. It’s equipped with smart tech tailored to ALS needs, e.g., home control systems that can be operated solely by eye movements, helping maintain independence when mobility becomes more limited.

✨ Community & home-life balance. While the design keeps the patient together with family, it also preserves their own dignity and private zone. Important for quality of life as ALS progresses.
We’re so proud of this recognition because this is not just architecture, it’s human-centered design at its best. One that supports real lives, real challenges, with empathy and innovation.

🔖 Let’s celebrate the impact of design in health and wellness!
👉 Share this to spread the word about how smart homes can help people living with ALS and show what inclusive, thoughtful design looks like.

Matt’s Place 2.0 is a 2025 Planet Positive Award honoree. Learn more about the entry, and browse the year's top projects, products and people.
