What's the Cause of The Behavior I Cannot Seem to Change?
Good Monday Morning!
I work with medical doctors and chiropractors on a regular basis who do not seem to be able to answer, "Why can't a person change the behaviors they struggle with?" Most will say it is “just a choice” but if it was that easy, everyone would be able to change into the perfect functioning person. But it is not!
The Brain and Nervous System Are So Powerful!
Our brains are so powerful and yet so weak. To make the choice that is healthy with things we have struggled with for a long period of time, is such a complex process. This “choice” involves what we began to use as coping tools early in life, what we were taught and agreed to by parents and others, how we are hardwired genetically, our current environment and more. For instance, if you began coping with tough life events using food, alcohol, drugs, s*x, or other unhealthy means during your puberty years, your chances of continuing that same coping skill are increased for the rest of your life. If you are genetically wired (as I am) to be predisposed to addictions and you coped with early life years in unhealthy ways, you will struggle or crave the unhealthy choice into adulthood. Throw in some trauma, humiliation, judgments of others, and other bad experiences and you have the recipe for struggle. If you have ever struggled to manage food in a healthy way, suffered substance addictions, or other unhealthy behaviors, I feel for you because I know you want to change yourself and be healthy. I really feel for you and I understand. But I promise you too there is hope if you want to change. It will not be easy but it is so worth it. Yesterday is history and tomorrow is a mystery so they do not matter, only today and the moments of today matter. Please focus on making healthy choices in your life. Exercise.
