Why are we proud to serve our Crispy Beef Taco with Refried Beans & Arroz Rojo today (and every time it is on the menu)?

Here are three reasons why:

1) Our rice (Mama Norma’s Arroz Rojo) is a special homemade recipe! The original recipe for the Arroz Rojo came from an AESD employee’s Mom.

2) Our salad bar features our homemade Pico de Gallo to complement this meal! Just another fresh made item on our Salad Bar.

3) We serve ALL of our meals with love!

🎁 That’s a wrap on !

AESD students grabbed their school lunch passport (AKA their tray) and explored foods originating from and inspired by countries throughout the world. The AESD Child Nutrition team decorated their cafeterias, dressed up, and welcomed students on a culinary adventure!

Here are three fast facts about the National School Lunch Program (NSLP):

1) The National School Lunch Program is the nation’s second-largest food & nutrition assistance program in the U.S.

2) According to the Arizona Department of Education, 96,135,216 million lunches were served to AZ students last school year.

3) We serve ~8,000 lunches a day!

Thank you for celebrating the National School Lunch Program with us this week! We hope you had as much fun as we did! ☺️

🚨Attention AESD campus staff: The last day to apply for the Staff Eat With Students program is TOMORROW, Friday, August 29!

Need a refresher on what the Staff Eat With Students program is? We got you. 😉

This is a board-approved employee benefit program designed to encourage meaningful interaction between adults and students, fostering positive relationship-building and ensuring that the focus remains on supporting healthy eating, nutrition, wellness, and overall well-being. By sitting with students, adults can better engage in conversations around these important topics, offering students the opportunity to connect, learn, and feel supported in a more personal and impactful way.

TL:DR - Campus staff get a (free) delicious school lunch while connecting with AESD students about all things wellness!

All AESD employees who wish to participate must complete the Agreement Form. Eligible staff can expect to be notified of their application status during the week of September 4, 2025. At that time, directions will be provided for how to access your meal benefit. This program will officially start on September 11.

Submit your form today and see you in the cafeteria!

We are super stoked to drop this gem of a salad on students’ trays. 🤩 What’s in this salad? We thought you’d never ask...

This colorful salad contains:

- Fresh Spring Mix Lettuce

- Red Bell Pepper
- Tri-Color Quinoa
- Sunflower Seeds
- Feta Cheese
- Corn
- Dried Cranberries
- Homemade Pesto Ranch Dressing (which is a delicious combo of our Broccoli Pesto and our Buttermilk Ranch Dressing)

We will be offering this salad again this Thursday (8/28). Stop by and see what all the (completely valid) hype is all about!

🥦Making their debut on our lunch menu today is our... Italian Roasted Veggies!

This is one of the new recipes our Menu Development Committee dreamed up last year. Over the summer we taste tested this recipe and got the Managers’ stamp of approval to add Italian Roasted Veggies to our lunch menu.

Pictured here is the “before photo”. AKA Fresh veggies before they are spiced and roasted. 😁

We can’t wait to hear what students think!

🎉 All students eat free at AESD!

We are proud to serve breakfast AND lunch for free to all of our students at all of our schools. How are we able to serve free meals to all? Our district currently participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) which is a federal program that allows us to serve school meals at no cost to families.

So stop by and eat with us! You can checkout our menu on our website at: www.alhambraesd.org/page/menus.

What did a recent study published in February 2025 say about school salad bars?

This study confirmed what we see at AESD salad bars!

1) Students eat more fruits.
AND
2) Students select a greater variety of fruits and vegetables.

So basically... School salad bars for the win! We have some new recipes that will be featured on our salad bars this upcoming school year. Stay tuned!
(The “Impact of school salad bars on fruit and vegetable selection, intake, and waste in Mid-Atlantic elementary schools” study was conducted in a large Mid-Atlantic school district that had 153 elementary schools and served over 189,000 elementary K-6th grade students.)
