‘tis the season for hiking, and bringing your out-of-town friends and family hiking! If you haven’t noticed, it’s not exactly 30° and snowing here. It’s important to remember to DRINK WATER here in the desert! We are usually eating more goodies and maybe drinking things other than water, so our thirst centers are off and we may not realize how much we need. Also, we tend to talk more this season because of getting together with others. Talking can cause an insensible loss of fluid, requiring more intake. Coffee causes something called.isosthenuria, which is an inability to concentrate your urine, so if you’re drinking more than normal, that may dehydrate you as well. Importantly, although it may feel cool on your skin, hiking in the sun can also cause insensible losses of water through your skin and breath. Make sure to pregame water when you go hiking, and then bring enough so you have half of it left by the time you turn around. Let’s all stay safe and have a great holiday! 🎄🎄
