First field work after my wife and I welcomed our little girl into the world 3 weeks ago.

3 weeks of sleepless nights and poor diet have certainly done a bit of a number on the conditioning base that I had achieved, but just getting back out in the heat and running around feels great!

Special thanks to to taking care of our little girl while I get sweaty and stinky!

After over 2 years of not being able to do running and field work without significant pain, I am finally seeing significant improvement. My performance is a far cry from where I was 3 years ago during my last competitive season. I tried a 300 yard shuttle today at the end of my workout to gauge my level. It was slow. 65 seconds. About 7-8 seconds slower than I used to be able to do repeats of the same workout.
For reference, we think elite males should perform this test in 55 seconds or less.
This is a good metric for who is going to be able to grind out long points.
While my performance may never get back to where I would like, I am just happy to be able to get out on beautiful days like today, run around, and be able to chase some frisbees this summer.

If you play sports long enough, no matter how well you prepare, the injury bug eventually bites.

Many times, these are little injuries: a minor ankle sprain, a bit of back pain, some pain in your knee or shoulder; but other times, these are life changers; the injuries that cause you to sit out a whole season, require surgery, or make you consider hanging up the cleats all together.

Failing to eat enough calories is a mistake that a lot of people make.
I think the advice is improving, and nutrition advice for the athlete is becoming more available, but it is hard to sort through all of the noise of nutrition advice.

A lot of nutrition advice focuses on eating a lot of healthy food which includes fruits and vegetables.
These are very nutrient dense foods, but not very caloric dense food, especially vegetables.

When training at a high volume like many ultimate players, it is easy to underfuel.

In this study, underfueling was 25 calories/kg body weight, and properly fueling was 50 calories/kg bodyweight.

Again, this is for very active females training 4-10x/week, so don't go stuffing your face with cheeseburgers and blame us when you gain 10 lbs of fat; BUT! if you are like many ultimate players and train hard and train a lot, please EAT!

The new year is a great time for a reset and a great time to set new goals.

Following through on those goals is something that unfortunately happens only about 50% of the time.

If you can gather the motivation, you still need the capability, and opportunity, or you are likely to fail.
