Did you know that 1/5 of Americans identify as neurodivergent? According to the Harvard Business Review, neurodivergent employees might be better at understanding complex mathematics, memorizing intricate details, and concentrating at an unmatched level. Valuable skills that can shine in a variety of workplace settings, including our work at The Trade:

Work hard, play hard!
➖This week on The Mountain, apprentices have kept busy with housekeeping during a stretch of packed weekends at The Innstead. That includes churning out batches of the Innstead's signature granola!
➖They've worked with mentors Greg and Forrest to put the finishing touches on The Homestead renovation. Estimated completion is next week, and it's been a great lesson in the importance of finish work.
➖Speaking of finish work, mentor Nick has helped apprentices take the Parker Barn interior to the finish line. Only a couple walls left and it's looking amazing.
➖Facilities manager and mentor Jim has had plenty of electrical, plumbing and heating projects for apprentices, including new faucets and updated wiring. The extra hands make the work lighter.
➖Outside, apprentices worked with mentor Andrew to design, build, and place duck boxes to provide habitats for the animals that were impacted by the recent logging efforts. They also trekked to Mountain Valley Treatment Center to help fill a shortage in the program's facilities department, and plan to be back for more work in Plainfield.
➖On to the play part, apprentices took advantage of an abundance of snow for some snowmobiling with mentors Bill, Jim, and Nick. It was a hit!

This week on The Mountain, apprentices focused on work at the Parker Barn shop.

Lots of planing work to get the perfect 3/4" thickness for pine boards to hang on the walls (as you can see on the left). Mentor Greg helped apprentices get started with the nail gun and mentor Nick is ensuring that there aren't large gaps between the boards. After many chilly days of work in the barn this winter, mentor Jim worked with apprentices to get the new propane heater up and running. The cold will stick around for a bit, and heat makes a big difference!

Outside the barn, apprentices worked with mentor Andrew to prepare more loads of wood for local residents. It's been an extra frigid winter, so the loads will help restock dwindling supplies.

And back inside at The Homestead, apprentices installed drawer slides on kitchen cabinets, built wooden covers for baseboard heaters, and installed a new bathroom vanity. This big project is nearing completion, and there's nothing like the satisfaction of stepping back and admiring a job well done!

Happy Frosty Friday (at least in our neck of the woods)!

Over the last couple weeks, winter tasks have been in full force—including snow shoveling the two plus feet of snow that fell on The Mountain. Apprentices hopped on tractors to mix and load sand, and some even manned plow trucks to stay on top of the Pike Glades parking lot. They also split wood for local neighbors, whose supply is diminishing due to the extended cold snap. As they say, firewood will warm you up three times: when you fell it, when you split and stack it, and when you burn it!

We can't afford to have a boiler go out, so mentor Jim and an apprentice got right to work when they noticed one acting up in The Homestead. They serviced the boiler, replaces nozzles and filter, tightened some fittings, and we're back in action! Renovation at The Homestead is almost complete, and we're preparing to paint the newly hung interior siding.

One day involved a trip to the "big city" of Hanover, helping move furniture for Moosilauke Counseling Services as they prepare to move offices to Lebanon. Apprentices enjoyed the change of scenery and lunch away from The Mountain.

Finally, mentor Jim worked with several apprentices to install a propane heater in the ceiling of the Parker Barn. They successfully hung the unit and connected pipes, with only a few steps to go before we can hook up the propane.

Although temps will plummet again this weekend, there is optimism in the air. We can hear different birds singing in the morning and feel a change in the sunshine. Spring is coming!

Mentorship informs everything we do at The Trade. Executive Director Noah Zind offers his personal take on why it's so important for our apprentices!

Going to college doesn’t always prove intelligence or capability. Lots of young adults find college isn’t the right fit, for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, what can follow is a difficult in-between space: working dead-end jobs, feeling unmotivated, or losing confidence.

Families come to The Trade asking a simple but important question. What do apprentices do in our program, and how does it help them move forward?
