Hello world!

I took a break from social media to regroup and I'm happy to say I'm back!

I just finished teaching a 6 week meditation class I developed for my local YMCA. Based on feedback from the students, I created a guide filled with tips and tricks to build a meditation practice.

Are you a meditation skeptic?

Why is that?

Do you think meditation is:

🌻Hard to do because you can’t sit still?
Isn’t for people “like you”?

🌻Requires a different set of beliefs than what you have?

🌻Or it’s impossible to believe that meditation can provide the benefits people talk about including calm, focus, and joy?

If you are a person who has a hard time sitting still, start small. Maybe a few deep breaths while your body is still and then increase the time you sit as you feel comfortable. You don’t have to jump in with 10, 20, 40 minutes. Every person is unique so you do you!

From my experience, there is no “type” of person that meditation can benefit; it’s for everyone! It doesn’t require anything special, no fancy pillow or clothing or candels or bells, or even an Instagram worthy backdrop. It just requires a commitment to be still and bring focus to the object you choose.

While some people who meditate incorporate religious beliefs into their practice, you do not have to. This practice can merely be a way to notice how your brain wanders and to train it not to do that.

And finally, a certain level of skepticism is good and I appreciate that. The benefits of meditation do sound amazing, but will it really work for you?

I say there is little harm in trying it out. Start small and see what you think. Commit to a week of meditating for whatever length of time works for you. Write down at the beginning of the week your stress level and your concentration level and see if has improved at all by the end of the week.

Seeing is believing.

Traveling. 🛫

I absolutely love to get away to new scenery and new things, but it can also mean a stall to your weight loss goals.

This month, I'm away from home for 3 weeks, which is the longest stretch I've ever had. Apparently my constant companion Chloe the lab mix, is not happy with my absence. 🐶

To prepare for success on this trip, I brought my travel blender, my superfood shake powder, and a good attitude that I will make this work! 🤩

Even with this positive mindset, I still have not followed my plan 100%.

But that's OK. I'm seeing friends, family, spending time at the beach, and shopping - all the things that make for good memories.

I am making the best choices I can while traveling, but I want to balance having a good time. Honestly, It's no fun to think about food choices all the time.

Life is about balance so make sure you find your balance; and enjoy life!

Do you struggle to increase your veggie intake? Here are some simple ways to do that without feeling overwhelmed:

🌻 Veggie prep, veggie prep, veggie prep. Quickly steaming or oven roasting some veggies in bulk are a great, quick way to make loads for veggies for your daily meals.

🌻 Frozen veggies rule. I stock up on frozen cauliflower rice, and other frozen veggies that can quickly be thrown into the microwave for any meal.

🌻 Buy the pre-cut veggies. No guilt and no shame here. Remember that the lifestyle gurus we see on TV have lots of other household help. Do yourself a favor and pay for any short-cuts you can.

Emotional eating.

It can destroy our self-confidence and get you stuck in a cycle of guilt, eating when we're not hungry, which leads to excess weight and more stress.

Turning to food in times of stress is common in our society. However, dealing with the underlying issues that cause you to turn to food is how you can overcome emotional eating.

There are tools available to help you tune into your hunger cues and move past the emotional eating force. Reach out and we can get started on your journey to overcome emotional eating.

I love pickles and these two recipes are simple to do. One is garlic dill and the other is spicy bread and butter.

Pickles are great for the microbiome in your gut.

So we're launching billionaires into space. 🚀
Why should you care about this?

Because space travel will be coming for regular folks like you and I at some point.

I think that's pretty cool!

Exploring new planets 🪐 and seeing views that very few humans have experienced. 🌎

To see these wonderful views, it will require long hours on space craft.

I have one question about this: What will you eat?

Will it be the classic astronaut drink Tang that we remember from childhood? 🧃

Wikipedia has a great history of space food. Most of it is not appetizing.

Mercury mission astronauts ate bite-sized cubes, freeze-dried powders, and tubes of semiliquids. 🤢

Luckily, many countries and companies are working towards more appetizing food for space flight.

But there is no way around it, your choices will be limited because of the physical laws of nature.

And what you eat will have some amount of processing (freeze dried, dehydrated, thermostabilized, etc.)

Nutritious food is perishable. And the Earth is plentiful in nutritious, whole foods.

So eat like you live on Earth. 🍎 🥦

I'm starting my day with some gratitude

Gratitude for my family
