Pittsburgh Translational Research Initiative ( ) has started aphasia community group!

We meet monthly for supported communication groups for people with Aphasia, their families, caretakers, and SLPs.

Wishing you Happy Holidays from everyone at the Pittsburgh Community Aphasia Center! ✝️🎅🎄🕎🎁🎉 Our members created this card, with Bridgit drawing the train with her non-dominant hand. Amy generating the main theme and our graduate student clinician Amanda led the team effort! 📝

We had a wonderful last meeting of the semester!

12/03 Recap:

-We started off with some updates:
• Our Virtual Advocacy Meeting will be on 12/08/25 at 11AM. Our small groups will begin on 1/12/26 and our next big group will be on 1/14/26.
• The Aphasia Social Group in Canonsburg will take place on Friday, 12/12 from 10am-12pm!
• Our spring programming will run from Monday January 12 - Wednesday April 22 2026 and will include Monday small groups (Movie Club at 11am and Hobbies & Interedts at noon), and on Wednesdays, Conversation Group at 9am, Big Group at 10:30am, and Book Club at 1pm! 📆
• Our upcoming guest speakers scheduled for January include Dr. Jeff Johnson and Dr. Will Hula SLPs from VA Pittsburgh with current research updates on 1/21 🧠 and nutritionist, Shannon Frizzell, on 1/28 🍓🥦
• Keep and eye out for an official email of our Holiday E-Card! 🚂
-We then celebrated the holiday season with “Name that Tune” 🎵, “Minute-to-Win-It” games, and shared delicious cookies🍪!
-We would like to thank Allison, Amanda, and Shayna for all their hard work, support, and friendship throughout the semester! We appreciate all you do and wish you luck in your bright professional careers ahead! ❤️

This Wednesday, our PPA Support Group will be hearing from our Guest Speaker, Christine Lepore, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-AAC! She is a board certified specialist in AAC and the Clinical Director of the ICAN Talk Clinic at the AAC Institute! Be sure to attend this meeting if you are interested!

We had a great time this week at our Thanksgiving potluck!

11/19 Recap:

-We started off with some fun facts and updates:
• Some exciting events we have coming up are our Wicked Movie Outing 🍿🎬 on Monday 12/1, our Pamela’s Breakfast 🥞, Big Group Holiday Celebration 🎄, and last meetings of the semester on Wednesday 12/3, and our ZOOM Advocacy Committee Meeting on Monday, 12/8!
• The Aphasia Social Group in Canonsburg will take place on Friday, 12/12 from 10am-12pm!
• Our next PPA support group will be on 12/03 at 2pm! Our topic will be Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with Christine Lepore, M.A. CCC-SLP, BCS-AAC, ICAN Talk Clinic
• Our spring programming will run from Monday January 12 - Wednesday April 22 2026 and will include Monday small groups (Movie Club at 11am and Hobbies & Interedts at noon), and on Wednesdays, Conversation Group at 9am, Big Group at 10:30am, and Book Club at 1pm! 📆
-We then broke off into our small groups:
• Open Conversation Group: Members discussed life updates with travel, family, and upcoming events! 🗣️
• Game Group: We played Pittsburgh Jeopardy!
• Topic Group: We made Thanksgiving wreaths and discussed artwork for our holiday card!

A reminder that there are no meetings next week. We will see you all at our next meeting on Wednesday, 12/3!

• Our next PPA support group will be on 11/19 at 2pm! Our topic will be Aphasia and Identity with Guest Speaker Kristen Nunn, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System
• Our spring programming will run from Monday January 12 - Wednesday April 22 2026 and will include Monday small groups (Movie Club at 11am and Hobbies & Interedts at noon), and on Wednesdays, Conversation Group at 9am, Big Group at 10:30am, and Book Club at 1pm! 📆
-We then broke off into our small groups:
• Open Conversation Group: Members discussed where we grew up, our siblings, and upcoming outings! 🗣️
• Game Group: We played Box of Lies!

-Our guest speakers, Michelle Govan and Jean Royce from the Dementia 360 program at Presbyterian Senior Care Network talked to us about the 6 pillars of brain health! 🧠
-Mark brought an album to share some pictures of houses that he has painted! 🎨🏡
- We then shared some updates:
• Some exciting events we have coming up are our Thanksgiving Potluck on 11/19 and our Holiday Celebration on 12/3!
• Our very own Dr. Will Evans is getting honored with an award and doing a lecture with in-person and Zoom options on Friday November 7 at 3:30pm! 🏅
• Our next PPA support group will be on 11/19 at 2pm! Our topic will be Aphasia and Identity with Guest Speaker Kristen Nunn, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System
• Our spring programming will run from Monday January 12 - Wednesday April 22 2026 and will include Monday small groups (Movie Club at 11am and Hobbies & Interedts at noon), and on Wednesdays, Conversation Group at 9am, Big Group at 10:30am, and Book Club at 1pm! 📆
• New Idea: PCAC Holiday Card Project! Members work on wording and our artistic members will design a cover that represents us.
• Our Advocacy Meeting is next Monday 11/10 at 10am! If you can’t attend in person, there is a Zoom option as well!

• Open Conversation Group: Members shared updates with travel, family, and upcoming events! 🗣️
• Game Group: We played Fact or Fiction!
• Topic Group: We talked about our hometowns and heartfelt memories 🏡❤️

We look forward to seeing everyone at our next Big Group on Wednesday, November 12 where we will hear from our Member Spotlight, Joe, Imaging Physicist, Rugby Coach, and Hawk Trapper! We will also be brainstorming ideas for our holiday card in our topic group so come ready with ideas!

-Our guest speaker, Dr. Sarah Wallace, shared a presentation on making a plan to rediscover or explore new hobbies. We discussed how hobbies can be adapted, such as the track chairs offered at Frick Park. 🚲🧶📚🎶
-We then celebrated our October birthdays! Happy birthday Pat and Jenn! 🥳🍰
- We then shared some updates:
• Some exciting events we have coming up are our Thanksgiving Potluck on 11/19 and our Holiday Celebration on 12/3!
