Singing Ladies: time is coming for us all (and it’s totally normal). I’m 39 and have noticed this with myself significantly in the last decade. 🎤 Some of it is out of our hands, but some we can control. Let’s break down the science while embrace the positive changes and preserve our vocal longevity.
Quick science behind a totally normal change 👇
1️⃣ Hormones Shift
During peri- and post-menopause, estrogen drops + relative androgens rise → vocal folds get a bit heavier → pitch lowers.
2️⃣ Vocal Fold Changes
Aging can cause thinning, bowing, and stiffness in the vocal folds (presbyphonia), making lower pitches easier than higher ones.
3️⃣ Breath Support Declines
Reduced lung capacity and rib mobility mean less subglottal pressure, so the voice naturally settles into a lower, easier range.
4️⃣ Posture + Muscle Changes
Neck and chest tension or age-related posture shifts affect resonance and pitch control.
5️⃣ Medical Contributors
Thyroid issues, reflux, past smoking, and certain meds can all deepen the voice over time.
6️⃣ Habitual Use
Many women speak lower in professional settings, and long-term habits can “set” a lower pitch.
✨ It’s normal. It’s common. And with the right vocal training, flexibility and range can absolutely improve at any age. Need some additional guidance? ☎️ 412-716-2482 or slide into my DMs.
