Lack of sleep leads to slower healing times.

Not giving your body the building blocks for healing and/or fueling your body enough will take the injury longer to heal.

Refusing to take advice or always changing to find the “quickest fix” will only lead to more problems down the road or a quicker road to re-injury.

If you want longevity and progress - do the little things right and STAY THE COURSE.

Your failure doesn’t define you.

But how you respond to it does.

Last week I missed a 625 deadlift. I haven’t missed that in a LONG time. It sucked. I was frustrated. But I didn’t panic. I looked at what I could do better to prepare. I did those things. The next week, I did 640 x2.

If you learn from failures then you have every chance in the world to take that next step.

People define success by accomplishments - but what they don’t talk about? Success takes time, it takes repetition after grueling repetition, and it takes the ability to fail and learn from it.

Don’t let failure, frustration, or injury determine your success. Let it be your next learning opportunity.

Hi, I’m Katie! The newest Function Reforged Run Coach!! I have been running for the majority of my life & I have been so lucky to work with many amazing coaches. My coaches have not only helped me reach my fitness & running goals, but helped shape me into the person I am today! I hope to have the same impact on my future athletes.

Throughout my running career I have completed 11 full marathons, 8+ half marathon, and competed in DIII Cross Country. I am also a triathlete & hybrid athlete. I value intentional cross training and strength training and have also competed in powerlifting, Olympic triathlons, and an Ironman 70.3.

Tight hips on squats and deadlifts?

Instead of forcing it every time - try a few sets of these before jumping on the bar!

Great way to get the hips opened up before you start your warmup sets!

Also a great hip opener for runners! Especially if you’re on any uneven roads on trails - take care of those hips!

Getting faster required:

Consistency, injury PREVENTION, strength training, appropriate fueling, accountability, flexibility, informed and purposeful workouts, adjustments, coaching feedback, problem solving, motivation, and some really hard work. The process is the best part & I love working alongside my 1:1 athletes as they push towards their own goals!

Often the TFL muscle is the culprit in lifters and runners. It attaches directly to the IT band which runs along the outside of your leg.

The world threw me (and everyone in PGH) a curve ball.

This winter storm has had me shoveling for three days straight. My house, my neighbors’ cars and homes, and patients’ cars and homes. Pushing stuck cars. Slipping while pushing stuck cars. Spending much more time in the car trying to drive and/or find parking on some of the city streets. Way out of my normal routine.

It’s a lot more fatigue than I expected to put on my body. But that’s okay! I’m not going to lose progress by adjusting my training!

What did I do?
- I decreased top end weight
- I decreased the number of sets I completed
- I focused on the volume and quality of my accessory movements instead of my top end weights
- I added rest time between heavy movements but kept it moving on lighter movements
- If something was sore or hurting, I didn’t push it

Make adjustments! If you find yourself getting hurt too frequently and struggling to adjust your training to life just shoot us a DM and let’s talk about it!
