📺 “Do Unto Others”: Sunday Reflections, Chef’s Kindness, and Miriam Makeba’s Moral Clarity

📝

As Sunday approaches, I reflect on the sacred rhythm of going to Mass with my mother in the 1950s and ’60s at Saint Stephen’s Church in Brooklyn. She was my first teacher of the Golden Rule—not just through scripture, but through how she lived: with dignity, empathy, and unwavering moral clarity.

This 60-second video blends memory, media, and resistance:
🎥 Chef from South Park feeding a variety of characters—an animated act of kindness and clarity.
🎶 “Do Unto Others” by Miriam Makeba & The Skylarks—an audio ritual of moral truth.

📖 The Golden Rule: Scripture & Perennial Philosophy

📜 Matthew 7:12 — “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

This precept is echoed across all major faiths:

• Judaism: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor.”
• Islam: “None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.”
• Hinduism: “This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.”
• Buddhism: “Treat not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.”

This is the perennial philosophy—a shared moral compass across civilizations. It transcends politics. It defines humanity.

🧭 Civic Clarity: Shame on Them

Let us be clear:
Donald J. Trump and his supporters have not merely abandoned the Golden Rule—they have been co-opted into defending cruelty, corruption, and depraved indifference.
They cheer for policies that harm the poor, the immigrant, the vulnerable.
They enable Project 2025’s authoritarian blueprint.
They applaud a Supreme Court that erodes justice.
Shame on them. Shame on the GOP. Shame on MAGA. Shame on SCOTUS.

This video is a ritual of remembrance and resistance.
It is a call to reclaim moral clarity.

🎈Love, Peace & Soul: Jackie Wilson’s Anthem Floats Over Napa’s Morning Sky

This short captures a moment of grace: flight, soul, and timeless joy.

🎶 Why this song?
Because it soars.
Because it celebrates.
Because it’s pure joy.

• “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher”

His charisma was electric. His voice? Unstoppable.
He didn’t just sing—he ascended.

Sunday Morning: Lou Reed’s Farewell, Moral Clarity & Andy Warhol’s Velvet Warning 🎶
📝
🚨Before the misinformation.
Before the algorithms.
There was Lou Reed—whispering warnings on a Sunday morning.
What if the quietest song in rock history was actually a siren?

🕯️ Why This Post Exists

Today marks the anniversary of Lou Reed’s final live performance with The Velvet Underground—
📍 Max’s Kansas City, NYC
August 23, 1970.

Max’s wasn’t just a venue.
It was a crucible of culture.
In the back room, Andy Warhol held court.
You might spot:

• 🎭 Bowie, Patti Smith, Mapplethorpe
• 🎨 de Kooning, Judd, Flavin
• 🖋️ Ginsberg, Burroughs, Lebowitz
• 🎶 Springsteen, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper

Art, rebellion, and raw truth collided here.
Lou Reed’s final bow wasn’t just a performance—it was a punctuation mark.

🧭 My Lens: Reflection, Agency & Moral Clarity

This post isn’t just about music.
It’s about what “Sunday Morning”
invites us to do:
To reflect.
To confront our decisions.
To own their consequences.

In today’s America—
Where hate, racism, misogyny, and cruelty are weaponized through misinformation—
We must not surrender our agency.
We must not normalize cruelty.
We must not forget who we are.

We must choose the best version of ourselves—again and again.

Lou Reed’s lyrics whisper:
“Watch out, the world’s behind you…”
A velvet warning. A call to wake up.

🎶 The Song That Started It All

“Sunday Morning” — first track on The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967).
Written by Reed and Cale
on an actual Sunday morning.
Originally meant for Nico, but Reed’s voice made it hauntingly personal.

📍 Recorded at Mayfair Studios, Manhattan
🎚️ Producer: Tom Wilson
🎛️ Engineers: Kellgren & Dolph
🎹 Instruments:

• Reed: vocals, guitar
• Cale: celesta, viola, piano
• Morrison: bass
• Tucker: drums

The celesta’s shimmer, the lullaby tone—it’s the calm before the storm.
A sonic invitation to reflect, not escape.

🎨 Warhol’s Banana & Velvet Subversion

Warhol didn’t just produce the album—he branded it.
That iconic banana cover?
It wasn’t just pop art. It was provocation.

Early pressings said: “Peel slowly and see”—
Revealing a flesh-toned banana beneath.
A wink. A dare. A metaphor.

This wasn’t just fruit.
It was a manifesto.
Art refusing to stay silent.

Warhol saw the band as an extension of his Factory.
He brought in Nico, curated their look, and gave them space to be unapologetically themselves.
The album didn’t chart. It didn’t sell.
But as Brian Eno said:

“Everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.”

🧵 Your Turn: A Factory Moment

This isn’t just a post.
It’s a Factory moment.
Add your voice. Add your art.
Tag it. Share it. Peel it back.

🧭 Weigh in below:

• What does moral clarity mean to you?
• How do you reclaim your agency in a world of noise?
• What helps you manifest your best self—and resist the worst?
• What does “Sunday Morning” stir in you?

📢 Share your thoughts.
🔁 Share the post.
🎧 Let it inspire your own quiet reckoning.

🎥 Visuals: A Velvet Echo

The accompanying video draws quiet inspiration from Warhol’s original Velvet Underground album cover.
Its minimalist gestures—stark, deliberate, and portrait-oriented—echo the “Peel slowly and see” ethos.

Not a reenactment. Not a tribute.
But a visual whisper. A Factory echo.

The banana wasn’t just fruit.
It was a dare to look deeper.
This video invites the same: a moment of reflection, not spectacle.

It’s junior to the message, but born of the same spirit—
Art as invitation. Art as resistance.

🎉 Don Henley Turns 78
Dirty Laundry Still Reeks in 2025 🧺🎙️

Today we celebrate the legendary Don Henley—drummer, lyricist, and founding member of The Eagles—whose solo anthem Dirty Laundry continues to cut through scandal, suppression, and spin like a live wire in the fog.

📀 Released in 1982 on I Can’t Stand Still, the song skewers tabloid journalism, media manipulation, and the public’s appetite for outrage. Four decades later, the lyrics feel more prophetic than ever.

🗣️ Lyric Spotlight

“We all know that crap is king—give us dirty laundry.”
🧺
“You don’t really wanna know just how far it’s gone—just leave well enough alone.”

🎧 Recorded at: Village Recorders, Los Angeles

🎼 Musicians featured:
• Don Henley – lead vocals, tambourine
• Jeff Porcaro – drums 🥁
• Danny Kortchmar – guitar 🎸
• Leland Sklar – bass 🎸
• Waddy Wachtel – guitar 🎸

🎂 When Lyrics Became Lifelines: Celebrating Oscar Hammerstein II’s 130th Birthday (July 12, 1895) & HBO’s “Six by Sondheim” Revelation

In the blue glow of HBO’s Six by Sondheim (2021), six songs opened windows into Sondheim’s soul—and today, on Oscar Hammerstein II’s 130th birthday (July 12, 1895), that mentor’s lesson still hums.

Under the soft glow of a Doylestown library lamp, a boy’s small hand hovers above a polished grand piano. Steam rises from a chipped teacup; leather-bound notebooks lie open, reel-to-reel whispers spin. Oscar leans in, fountain pen poised:
“You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear…”
His truth strikes like a chord in a young heart.

The Majestic Theatre marquee blazed its Spanish-baroque promise on April 7, 1949—South Pacific’s opening night. Mary Martin’s tremulous hope, Ezio Pinza’s yearning baritone, and William Tabbert’s clear cry:
“It’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear.”
Then as now, a single lyric can ignite a nation’s conscience.

From Doylestown’s hush to Broadway’s roar, Sondheim discovered his true north. HBO’s Lapine, Haynes, and de Wilde wove archival clips and new performances into a tapestry of mentorship, all tracing back to Hammerstein’s quiet compass.

Yet every truth courts its foe. In 1949, Southern legislators raged against a lyric “inspired by Moscow.” Today’s echoes thunder: Trump/MAGA slashes to NEA & NEH; GOP/SCOTUS blows to student rights; Project 2025’s plan to defund youth arts. They teach indifference; Hammerstein drummed in compassion.

And so I stand, quiver drawn, each arrow a lyric, each petition a spark—ready to teach compassion in every hall of power.

📣 Your Turn
• Call your legislators—restore NEA/NEH & youth arts funding.
• Share your —tag the mentor who taught you to build, not break.

🐙✨ Octopus’s Garden:
A Birthday Tribute to Ringo Starr

Inspired by Ringo’s imagination and lyrics
🎂
85 years ago today, in a little corner of Liverpool,
a boy named Richard Starkey was born.
The world would come to know him as…
Ringo Starr. 🥁✨

He didn’t just keep the beat—
He gave The Beatles their swing, their soul, and their smile.

As a child, Ringo spent years in hospitals—
battling peritonitis and tuberculosis.
But out of that stillness came rhythm.
His first drum kit?
Biscuit tins… and a dream. 🍪🥁

By the early ’60s, he was drumming with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes
when fate—and a few sweaty nights in Hamburg
brought him into orbit with John, Paul, and George. 🌌

In 1962, he joined The Beatles.
And the Fab Four were finally complete. 🎤🎶

In 1968, Ringo took a break from the storm—
aboard a yacht in Sardinia, owned by Peter Sellers. 🎭🛥️

Now this is where it gets personal.
Sellers wasn’t just a comic legend—
he was one of my favorite actors.
The Pink Panther? Timeless. 🕵️‍♂️
Henry Mancini’s soundtrack? Pure magic. 🎷💗

While aboard, Ringo was served squid instead of fish and chips. 🦑
The captain told him:
“Octopuses collect shiny things to build gardens on the ocean floor.”

And just like that…
a song began to bloom. 🌊✨
A place of peace, far from fame, far from friction.
A sanctuary under the sea. 🐚

He imagined a place where he could be…
under the sea, in an octopus’s garden, in the shade. 🎶

Back in the studio, Ringo started writing.
But he only played guitar in one key—E. 😅

Enter George Harrison—my favorite Beatle. 💜
George helped shape the chords,
added his signature slide guitar,
and brought the song to life. 🎸

He later said:
“It’s only the second song Ringo wrote… and it’s lovely. So peaceful. Cosmic, even.” 🌌

“Octopus’s Garden” found its home on Abbey Road in 1969. 💿
Tucked between heartbreak and heaviness,
it offered a moment of childlike wonder.

Ringo even made the bubbles himself—
blowing through a straw into a glass of milk. 🥛🎧
Today, at 85, Ringo is still touring with his All-Starr Band. 🎤
Spreading joy, rhythm, and that signature peace sign. ✌️💥

The 2025 lineup includes:
🎸 Steve Lukather (Toto)
🎤 Colin Hay (Men at Work)
🎷 Warren Ham (Kansas)
🧑‍🎤 Hamish Stuart (Average White Band)
🥁 Gregg Bissonette
🎹 Buck Johnson (Aerosmith touring band)

A supergroup of legends—
led by the most joyful drummer in rock.

✌️💖 Join Ringo’s Birthday Tradition

At any time today, wherever you are in the world…
Pause.
Breathe.
And share a moment of Peace and Love.

Then pass it on.
🗣️ Tell us in the comments:

— Who’s your favorite Beatle?
— What Beatles album changed your life?
— And what song still gives you chills?

Let’s celebrate the rhythm, the refuge, and the ripple. 🌊

From Liverpool to Sardinia to stages around the world,
Ringo’s garden keeps growing—
one beat, one smile, one peace sign at a time.

Happy Birthday, Ringo.
Thanks for the rhythm… and the refuge. 🐙🎶

85 years later, he’s still keeping time—
not just with drums,
but with joy.
Peace and love, always. ✌️💫
