Cesarean births account for roughly 1 in 3 births in the United States. And yet they are often the births where doula support is considered least necessary. The opposite is true. A cesarean is major abdominal surgery. It can be planned or unexpected. It can feel like relief or like grief or like both at the same time. What it always is...is profound. And every person moving through it deserves continuous, unwavering support. That is what a doula provides. In any room. At any birth. Black Maternal Health is not a week. It is every appointment where a concern went unheard. Every room where pain was under treated. Every birth that deserved better. As a doula, I show up for every birthing body. And I also know that many Black and Brown birthing people feel most at ease with a doula who shares their background.
