Let’s talk about the light in your eyes thing that I mentioned.

Leptin is not just about hunger. It is a core safety and energy signal that tells the brain whether the body can burn fuel, build tissue, repair hormones, and stay resilient under stress. When leptin signaling is impaired, the body shifts into conservation mode. Energy drops, inflammation rises, sleep becomes fragmented, body temperature regulation falters, and the nervous system stays on edge. Morning light entering the eyes is one of the primary ways leptin signaling gets anchored correctly for the entire day.

When that light hits your eyes, it activates the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the master clock of the brain. This clock coordinates cortisol timing, melatonin release, insulin sensitivity, thyroid output, and mitochondrial energy production. For women, this directly impacts cycle regularity, ovulation signaling, progesterone stability, PMS severity, and overall hormonal resilience. For men, it affects testosterone production, s***m health, muscle maintenance, metabolic rate, mood stability, and cardiovascular health. When the clock is off, hormones follow. When the clock is clear, the body starts working with you instead of against you.

Your sudden urge to cringe at something you said three years ago at 2am when you cannot sleep formed as an intelligent adaptation to your early environment.

When a nervous system grows up around unpredictability, emotional immaturity, or chronic stress, it learns to scan for threat and self-monitor constantly. Over time, that vigilance turns inward and becomes an internal voice that questions, edits, and second-guesses everything. What feels like a personality trait is often a nervous system strategy that never got updated.

Somatic work addresses this at the level where it actually lives. These patterns are not stored as ideas alone. They are embedded in muscle tone, breath patterns, posture, facial tension, and the way your system prepares for danger before your mind is even aware of it. That is why insight alone rarely changes these loops. The nervous system has to experience safety, not just understand it.

Through somatic practices, the body is given new information. Slow orienting, grounding, gentle movement, and regulation exercises interrupt the automatic threat response and create space between stimulus and reaction. Over time, this teaches the nervous system that it no longer has to stay on guard. As the body softens, the mind no longer needs to maintain the same defensive narratives to stay safe.

This is how those long-held beliefs begin to loosen without force or self-correction. You are not trying to convince yourself of anything. You are allowing the system to recalibrate based on present-day safety rather than past experience.
