Next Tuesday, December 2nd 2025, support us during GiveBig Pittsburgh at bit.ly/GBOT25. Your donations make it possible for us to provide community-based occupational therapy meeting people where they are outdoors, in shelter, and in housing. Our evidence-based, equitable rehab care for people experiencing homelessness with physical, mental health, and cognitive disabilities bridges the gap from survival to long-term transition out of homelessness: to get housed and STAY housed.

Talk about occupational injustice, deprivation, and hierarchy of needs.

Save the date! On Tuesday December 2nd 2025 we are participating in Give Big Pittsburgh.
We are a small nonprofit of just 3 occupational therapists serving people across Allegheny County experiencing homelessness.

The journey out of homelessness doesn’t end with keys to a door. We see people outdoors, in shelter, AND follow into housing. Continuity across settings is key to build trust, resources, and skills to actually stay housed for a permanent transition out of homelessness.
Funds support operational costs, occupational therapy services, and supplies for skills training keep housing such as cleaning, cooking, adaptive equipment, and more.

We hope you consider supporting us next month at https://bit.ly/GBOT25

This is how we use the full scope of occupational therapy: housing transitions and daily routine development, neurorehabilitation of physical conditions, getting back to activities (hiking!) that give you purpose and meaning in life, all while enjoying the Pittsburgh fall leaves 🍂

🎃 the horrors persist but so do we 👻
Our twice-a-week occupational therapy groups in Second Avenue Commons are our lowest barrier option of Outreach Therapy support, no referral needed. This week's groups planned and threw a shelter-wide Halloween party, with Jordann in a banana costume and more pizzas than I can count.

Outreach Therapy is growing from 1 to 3 occupational therapists!
Rachael and Jordann, OT interns from this past year, are joining part-time. They are continuing group programming developed in their capstones and once all our paperwork is in order they will be starting individual sessions to expand our capacity (aka to start tackling our waitlist of referrals that I've been behind on).

We are so lucky to be surrounded by patients, clinicians, and organizations that speak about, value (and fund!) the role of OT, disability care, and support for successful transitions out of homelessness. In a world that is actively harming and criminalizing the people we care for, there's hope in building community and doing this work every day we can.

Everything from planning the event, what items and food are needed, flyer-making and distribution, setting up the grill, taking orders, cooking, and DJing -- all amazing skills from everyone that joined in this week!

Bracing for impact with new legislation in the US, the National Health Care for the Homeless Council is the expert at articulating what these budget cuts will do. The fight for basic healthcare and housing is already so difficult and the hill is getting even steeper. In the meantime we keep just showing up. Bake some cookies. Find those little shreds of hope together.

Large yellow text on a black background, “What does it take to make this?” above a picture of freshly baked cookies. Below, a nutrition facts style ingredients list reads:
“INGREDIENTS: Years of homelessness. Finally getting an apartment to call your own. But now you have disabilities that you didn’t have before. Re-learning how to navigate a kitchen. Frustration that you can’t do things with the same ease as you used to. Reminiscing on cooking memories. Realizing how much you have been through. Grieving time, relationships, and people lost. Gratefulness for food security. Enjoying being able to make something again.”
