I just completed the Diaphram, Ribs, & Embrylogic Midline workshop with Ron Murray Manual Osteopath, Rolfer ® and Berry method Practioner. This was a class filled with rich information on a deeper exploration of the body as a functional unit and the body system is self-regulating. There was quite a bit more learned in the class, Ron’s classes are gold nuggets to my professional Structural Integration work. A big thank you to Russ Pfiefer Advanced Rolfer ® and his wife sue a master bodywork Practioner for hosting this class in Venice Beach, California.

What is Fascia and why is Fascia important to your health?
Facts about fascia:
* Fascia connects all connective tissues (that means the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood)
* Fascia holds together the entire body.
* There are four different kinds of fascia (structural, intersectoral, visceral, and spinal), but they’re all connected.
* When it’s healthy, it’s flexible, supple, and it glides.
Because fascia appears and connects throughout the body, you might think of it like a dinning room table set placed on a table cloth. If you pull one corner, it can rearrange the position of everything else on the table.

Why does it matter?
Antonio Stecco, the brother of Carla Stecco orthopedic surgeon and son to the father Luigi Stecco who wrote the book on fascia, is a proud member of the first family of fascia, is a research assistant professor at New York University in physical medicine and rehabilitation who describes fascia’s main functions as helping coordinate the body’s movements (i.e., biomechanics), position in space (i.e., proprioception) and fluid flow throughout the body.

Related to these functions, research has indicated that Structural Integration (a type of body work thought to release stiff fascia) has improved balance in patients with chronic fatigue, range of motion in patients with neck pain, and reduced eye spasms in patients with muscular dystonia.

Trigger points have a special property called referred pain. Referred pain means that a trigger point in one muscle can create pain in another area. The myofascial trigger point can cause a shortening of the muscle and block 🩸 flow. For example, a trigger point on top of your shoulder, the trapezius, can referred pain to your neck and head. This can cause a headache. Bruce helps you get to the “Point”, with the Rolf Method of Structural Integration and his advanced integrative manual/massage therapies. In most instances, trigger points develop from overuse muscles, trauma or injury to a muscle, psychological stress, sustained repetitive activities (lifting heavy objects at work or working on a computer all day). Massage therapy and integrative manual therapy helps bring blood flow into the contracted muscle tissue which supplies a fresh amount of oxygen and allows the production of ATP which in turn stops fiber contraction. It brings balance back to your muscles and connective tissue.

What is Structural Integration???

Structural Integration (SI) is a process-based approach to somatic education, typically involving manual therapy, that explores the possibility of change in how you use and experience your body. Through education, awareness, and therapeutic touch, you can release painful, stressful patterns of tension. Effortful habits are replaced with feelings of comfort, ease of movement and posture, and a sense of whole-body coherence.
SI systematically addresses your body as a whole, usually over a series of sessions. Skillful touch brings relief from pain and discomfort, and awareness of how you’re holding and using your body. As your practitioner helps you inquire into how you relate with your body and environment, you may come to recognize patterns of tension that no longer serve you, and discover new options for movement, posture, self-care, and your overall physical experience. Rather than treating symptoms, SI practitioners work to help your body integrate internally between systems, and externally toward your life’s challenges.
