JUNETEENTH

A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

This June 2021, Congress passed legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

It's the first federal holiday approved since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983, just in time for Saturday's 156th anniversary of the day that marks the last African American slaves being freed in Texas in the wake of the Civil War. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865. On this date Major General Gordon Granger and Union troops of the American Civil War reached Galveston, Texas with news of the Civil War’s end and that the enslaved were now free.

🎉 🙌 CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH 🎉 🙌

Kognito Presents:

Maximizing Opportunities to Promote a Sense of Belonging in Campus Communities Webinar

Tuesday, May 25th
2:00 - 3:00 PM EST
(11:00 AM - 12:00 PM PST)

One of the central goals of higher education is to create a safe and supportive community where all students can succeed, but what happens when policies, programs, or people are adversely affecting a student or group based on their social identity?

How can we, as a campus, understand how these policies, programs, and attitudes affect certain individuals or groups? What do we need to do in order to shift campus culture and improve the safety and support for all students.

During this presentation, you’ll hear from dynamic group of faculty, staff, and students discuss:

Understanding the importance of having courageous conversations

The impact on student development and sense of belonging and self

Ways to create a safe and supportive campus for all

Looking After Your Mental Health

Keeping track of your mental health is no different than the rest of your body. You brush your teeth, comb your hair, wash your face. Daily routines and self care can help strengthen your reactions and perception in the face of negative events and experiences.

Not sure where to start?
*Check out the Self Care Pie Chart for an idea of what factors have a significant impact on your mind!

Needs tips or suggestions of activity or actions?
*Here are some great examples:

*Stay Active*
*Talk About How you Feel*
*Don’t Be Scared to Ask for Help*
*Be Creative or Learn and New Skill*
*Healthy Eating*
*Slow Down and Take a Break*
*Connect with Friends and Family*

Don't be afraid of going at it slowly. Be afraid only of standing still and doing nothing.
