Mike Maxwell, Trustee Area 4, Contra Costa County Board of Education It's not about endorsements, personal history, or "experience." It's time to put the kids and their education AHEAD of people's agendas. It's time for CHANGE!

About me: I graduated Los Cerros MS and Monte Vista High School, 1981. I later returned to Monte Vista and developed the Student Government/Leadership program from 13 kids meeting part time to 70+ students serving their school and community, while generating enough funding to support 5 class periods and the Leadership program. I further was a YMCA director, developing programs and services for thousands of kids and families in Contra Costa County. Later, I became a business person, working with the San Francisco Giants, VP of Waterlogic, and now doing freelance education and Healthcare consulting. My agenda is simple: KIDS TEACHERS FAMILIES FIRST. I grow weary of "career politicians" pushing agendas, boasting of accomplishments, and endorsements, all while our students suffer because their funding gets slashed, the best teachers leave the profession, and facilities and resources dwindle.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

I have had many career stops in my years, but my fondest memories are those when I was a teacher & coach. I have the UTMOST appreciation for all those in education - custodians, volunteers, paraprofessionals, classified, and of course, our teachers. Many of my students now have kids in school, and it warms my heart to see the transition, the hand-off, the payback!

There are a lot of dark edges surrounding our schools, and guns, and safety, and yet, our teachers and staff continue, tirelessly, to show up and change lives. I was once told, "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."

So to all my teacher friends, my students who are now teachers, and my family members that continue in this most honorable profession - THANK YOU.

Many contributed to my development; but 3 stood out:

Ms. Grace Hechler - 6th grade - Hopi Elementary School
Mr. Bruce Simonds - Metal Shop - Los Cerros Middle School
Mr. Jack Mansfield - Leadership - Monte Vista High School

Got a chance to run the CCCBOE meeting last night as Vice-President, as our President was away. Fortunate, as the Lesher Foundation grant was announced with plans to match, and provide classes and lessons for 9 schools. Thank you to all who support our teachers, kids and schools, like the Lesher Foundation has always done!
