Big shout out to Kari Mika-Lude! Congratulations and as always we are very proud of you! 👏

So I was keeping this quiet until it was official, and today... it finally is! I'm excited to share that I've officially signed a publishing contract with Cognella for a textbook entitled, "Counseling First Responders: Trauma-Responsive, Culturally Integrated Approaches," with my amazing co-author Janita Daggy (who I connected with at last year's American Counseling Association conference, by the way!).

For me, this project is an extension of my work with first responders, counseling students, and now the Violence, Loss, and Trauma (VoLT) Graduate Certificate at Marshall University. Over my 15+ years as a clinical mental health counselor and 10+ years as a counselor educator, one thing has become increasingly clear: Although first responders experience extraordinary levels of trauma exposure, and I think a lot of professionals *want* to help them, there are still relatively few training resources designed specifically for working with these populations.

Having ties to this community ourselves, our goal with this book is to bridge that gap by integrating trauma-responsive counseling approaches with the cultural realities of first responder professions.

As the project develops over the next year, we'll be connecting with other first responders to get input, and Cognella has graciously advanced us some funding to compensate them for their time.

Clinical professionals and educators, we also want to connect with you! If you're working in this space, whether in research, training, higher education, or clinical practice, we'd love to hear about the work you're doing.

More to come as the project progresses, but we anticipate a Fall 2027 release date!

A Project for Father and Son

Code 3 Health & Fitness is a family-owned-and-operated business based in Winfield, WV that was started by father-and-son team, Allen and Canyon Lude. They realized that while most people have some sort of health/wellness goals, they often don’t know how to achieve them. They also notice that there are too many scams and fads out there duping people out of money, providing minimal/temporary results. With that in mind, they decided to create Code 3.

Allen has spent many years in various first responder roles, including firefighting, EMS, and corrections, which is how Code 3 got its name. “Code 3” in the first responder world means “proceed with lights and sirens”. In other words, whatever is happening is urgent and requires a rapid response.

The driving force behind Code 3 Health & Fitness, therefore, is that wellness is urgent, and most people want to see results as quickly as possible. Through supplements, fitness coaching, nutrition consultation, and behavioral support, Code 3 aims to help people get the results they want in a healthy way and learn how to maintain the gains they make to ensure lasting results.
