Join Bridges to Hope, the Ponca City Strategic Opioid Response Plan, for a community-wide effort to safely dispose of unused or expired medications and help prevent prescription drug misuse. This free event is open to everyone!

• Hotdogs, chips & drinks served during 11:30 to 1:00 p.m.

We are pleased to see that the State of Oklahoma has begun issuing partial benefits to SNAP users pursuant to the most recent guidance provided by USDA to states. We applaud their efforts to move swiftly once they had definitive guidance and hope that all recipients will have access to their designated amounts very soon. It is important to keep in mind that depending on household size and other factors nobody will receive more than 65% of their normal benefits and some households will receive no benefits at all.

While this provides some relief to many SNAP households the fact is that a tremendous amount of hardship has already been faced and even when the federal government reopens and benefits are issued in full, it will not erase the damage done.
We urge our leaders at both the federal and state levels of government to ensure that this scenario can never happen again. At the federal level we need legislation that guarantees continuous SNAP funding even in a government shutdown and we need our state leaders to design a plan of action for a scenario in which SNAP is not funded by the federal government on a temporary basis.

We will likely never be able to fully measure the long-term impacts of this shutdown on people’s financial wellbeing, physical and mental health, but we will see evidence of it in our schools, in our nonprofits, in our communities, and in our trust in our government institutions.

We must all work together and make certain this never happens again.
